Over the years, I’ve come across several eye-catching covers. Some covers have
been so striking that I’ve added them to my to-be-read mountain immediately.
Whether it’s a hot man on the cover or a truly artistic depiction of a
character, covers can certainly make or break a book. That’s why this week, I
want to go over what I think makes for a great book cover!
First off, the font size and style can tell you a few different things about the
book and the author up front. If the book is written by a popular author, you’ll
usually find that the author’s name is larger or placed more in the center of
the book cover. This advertises the author’s name as a brand.
Of course colors can make a book stand out against a sea of similar books. I
find that when I’m browsing around the bookstore, my eyes tend to focus more on
covers with red or blue in them. But I’m curious to know if you have a different
experience!
Now onto the actual images on the book cover. For Paranormal Romances, you’ll
often find a shirtless man with sculpted arms and abs on the cover, which to be
honest, is a personal favorite of mine. You will never hear me complaining about
this. But sometimes couples are featured on the covers as well, depending on the
series. For Urban Fantasy series, it’s all about girl power. Strong women,
usually in leather and wielding some kind of weapon, will stand proudly front
and center, sending the idea that you’ll be in for a wild ride!
So as you can see, book covers are such an important part of a book’s success.
Do you have a favorite book cover? What is it that gets you to pick up a book?
In honor of this topic, I wanted to share some books that have gorgeous and
unique covers. Perhaps they may entice you to check them out!
ROADSIDE MAGIC by Lilith Saintcrow
Eye-catching and alluring, this series has some of the best artwork I’ve seen
on a book cover. With its bright colors and expert illustrations, the cover
artist definitely deserves an A+ for this masterpiece!
New York Times bestselling author Lilith Saintcrow returns to
dark fantasy with the second novel in her Gallow & Ragged series where the
faery world inhabits diners, dive bars and trailer parks.
Robin
Ragged has revenge to wreak and redemption to steal. As for Jeremy Gallow, the
poison in his wound is slowly killing him, while old friends turn traitor and
long-lost enemies return to haunt him.
In the dive bars and trailer
parks, the sidhe are hunting. War looms, and on a rooftop in the heart of the
city, the most dangerous sidhe of all is given new life. He has only one
thought, this new hunter: Where is the Ragged?
SPIDER GAME by Christine Feehan
This is perhaps the most unique cover I’ve seen in a long time. If the image
on this cover doesn’t have you wondering about the book, then I don’t know what else
will!
The #1 New York Times bestseling author of Viper Game spins an
irresistible web for readers with her all new GhostWalker novel.
The
Cajun dive wasn’t Trap Dawkins’ idea of fun. But the GhostWalker was only there
to find Cayenne. It’s where she found her victims. Poor suckers. Then again, who
wouldn’t want to leave a place like this with a woman like her?
Locked up,
experimented on, and never knowing kindness, Cayenne was bred this way— with a
heart of pure venom. Trap understands her. He survived his own dark past—and he
shares her desire for getting even. But now Trap’s greatest danger is Cayenne
herself. Because what’s inside her is hard to control—especially when it’s
aroused by a lover as reckless as Trap.
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE VAMPIRE by Sara Humphreys
The model on this cover definitely fits the description of Dakota Shelton, a
hot vampire cowboy. It’s an interesting combination for sure and will no doubt
turn heads.
Beloved author Sara Humphreys' acclaimed paranormal romance series
continues with sweltering attraction between two vampires who have all the time
in the world to satisfy their desires...
He wants eternity?
Dakota Shelton is a vampire cowboy with a penchant for cinnamon lollipops and
Johnny Cash. Though highly skilled and deadly dangerous to his enemies, he's
still a Texas good ol' boy at heart. And he has that heart set on wooing Trixie
LaRoux-the most badass punk rock chick in town-the old-fashioned
way.
Over her undead body...
Trixie is tough as nails and sharp
as a silver stake-the last thing she wants is a man to sit on a porch and not
grow old with. So it'll take going to hell and back fighting a new threat to
vampires before she admits Dakota's courtship makes her blood hum. Turns out
chivalry's not dead after all.
