1--What is the title of your latest release?
WE THREE QUEENS
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
Royal tensions surround Lady Georgie in real life as well as in a movie being shot at her house. There are too many would-be queens!
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
This is book 18 in my Royal Spyness series. The drama takes place at the estate where Lady Georgie now lives and had to tie in with the abdication of King Edward VIII.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Oh, absolutely. She’s delightful.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Smart, brave, naïve.
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
The naivete of Mrs. Simpson and King Edward who believed they could bypass parliament and convince the British people to let them marry, when there was no way the country would accept a divorced American woman as queen.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
Every day I go through what I wrote the day before and polish it before I move on. Then I go through a do a complete edit, give to Beta readers then a final edit before it goes to my publisher.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Oysters or caviar.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
When I am in California, I have a smallish office with all of my research books in easy reach and several toys to play with. Also my Celtic harp sitting on the floor when I need time to think. In my house in Arizona my office is upstairs away from the rest of the house. It has a balcony and a wonderful view of the mountains. I’m often distracted to stare out of the window.
10--Who is an author you admire?
My dear friend Louise Penny. She such a sweet person as well as a brilliant writer.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
Tony Hillerman’s The Blessing Way. It was my first book of his that I found at the library and the first book that showed me that mysteries could be more than the whodunit. They could transport you to another place and time. This is what I have aimed for in all my books ever since.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
Since I have been published for most of my life, I can’t remember a time before I had a publisher. I believe I’m coming up to 60 mystery and historical novels now.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
What I write: historical with a touch of mystery and romance.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
Probably Out of Africa. I love a tragic love story with beautiful setting. But if I want to watch something to make me feel good it’s Mama Mia!
15--What is your favorite season?
Spring. Full of hope, looking forward to warmer, longer days.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
A dinner cooked by my son, surrounded by family.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
The Magpie Murders and now the Moonflower Murders.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I love seafood in any cuisine. French food. Sometimes Indian or Chinese.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
I love to travel, usually to Britain, France, Italy these days. When I’m home I enjoy getting together with friends, doing watercolor painting, playing my Celtic harp… oh, and reading!
20--What can readers expect from you next?
I write books in two series each year plus one big stand-alone historical novel. So the next book coming out is in March and it’s a Molly Murphy mystery, co-written with my daughter Clare Broyles these days. It’s called SILENT AS THE GRAVE and it’s about the earliest days of the silent movie industry. Molly’s adopted daughter Bridie is picked to star in a movie, and everything goes wrong.
Royal Spyness #18
New mother Lady Georgiana "Georgie" Rannoch finds herself trying to separate fact from fiction when a murder occurs while a film is being made on the grounds of her estate in a new Royal Spyness Mystery from beloved bestselling author Rhys Bowen.
It's late 1936, and King Edward is in turmoil, having fallen in love with the scandalously divorced and even more scandalously American Wallis Simpson. He wants to marry her but knows that doing so will jeopardize his crown. Edward confides in his dear friend Darcy, Georgie's husband, and the couple agree to hide Wallis in their home while Edward figures out what to do.
But unbeknownst to Georgie and Darcy, Sir Hubert, the owner of the estate, has given a film crew permission to shoot a motion picture about Henry the Eighth and Anne Boleyn on the grounds. Trying to keep Mrs. Simpson hidden while raising a newborn baby seems like it couldn't be any more stressful for the Rannochs, until one of the stars of the film is found murdered on set. Georgie must solve the murder for king and country before scandal threatens to envelop them all.
