1--What is the title of your latest release?

JUST FOR THE SUMMER

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Two women in the hospitality industry, frustrated with their careers and lives, decide to do a job switch that they hope will be a reboot and resolve all their troubles. Like real life, plans go awry, and challenges abound, but the hope of unexpected romance sweetens the swap.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I wanted a big city boutique hotel and a sleepy rundown fishing lodge in the Northwest, so I went with Seattle and a remote area of Idaho.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Absolutely! And although the two main characters are total opposites, I would enjoy certain elements in both.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Ginnie: Determined, Sincere, Hardworking. Jacqueline: Fun-loving, Confident, Selfish.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I was reminded of how much we need balance in our lives. I sometimes fall into Ginnie’s mindset of being a workaholic, and forget to have fun. Although Jacqueline was a little too fun-driven, I could use a bit more of that in my life!

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

A bit of both. Although I try not to spend too much time editing while writing because that can put the kibosh of creativity.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

TBH, I’m not a real foodie. But I do prefer salty over sweet. If calories and carbs weren’t involved, I might go for some really good french fries—haha.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

Right now, it’s a little cluttered. I’ve got a small office in my house that’s exclusively for writing. Desk and big bookshelf, desk, worktable, loveseat. It’s pretty tight. I’m working on an annex office—for overflow— in a cute ‘she shed’ next to my pond, but winter weather and too much snow has put that on hold for now.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Can I name a few? Jane Kirkpatrick, Robin Jones Gunn, Francine Rivers. Not only because they’re great writers, but for how they live—amidst life challenges. Truly great women!

11--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

Wow, that was a while ago. Thirty years or more. My favorite editor, Lonnie Hull Dupont, who recently passed, called me at work (an international adoption agency) to tell me Thomas Nelson was offering a contract. I ran around and told all my work buddies and we celebrated!

12--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Contemporary women’s fiction.

13--What’s your favorite movie?

Just one answer? Sound of Music.

14--What is your favorite season?

Right now it’s summer. But by summer it might be autumn. TBH, I’m looking forward to spring!

15--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

The last few years my birthday has coincided with novel release day. But I’ve never been much of a celebrator of my own birthday. Not sure why. This year, I’d like to take a trip to the coast. Will see if that happens.

16--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Hmmm. I’ve been watching a lot of old classics lately. We just saw an old favorite that’s not too well known called Seventh Heaven with Jimmy Stewart and Simone Simon. It’s the sweetest story and amazingly made since it was barely in the talky movie era.

17--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

I love most Italian dishes. And for one single food I’d pick salmon filet done almost any way.

18--What do you do when you have free time?

Depends on the weather. Right now with snow everywhere, it would be read a book, watch an old movie, daydream of summer…. Other times it might be go camping or some kind of fun travel adventure. Planning to take an Alaskan cruise in May!

19--What can readers expect from you next?

My Christmas novella for this year is The Christmas Tree Farm, releases in September.

JUST FOR THE SUMMER by Melody Carlson

Just for the Summer

A Fun Swapped Roles Contemporary Clean Romance

Ginny Masters manages a popular boutique hotel in Seattle and manages it with aplomb. But the daily challenges and irritations of a fast-paced job and a demanding boss are starting to get to her. Jacqueline Potter manages her grandfather's fishing lodge in Idaho because it was the only job she could find after graduating with her hospitality degree. She's grateful for the work but longs for a more sophisticated and cosmopolitan life she's just not going to find in this backwoods town.

The solution to both their problems seems obvious. Just for the summer, they'll swap jobs and lifestyles. But they never anticipated swapping love interests . . .

In this fabulous new twist on an age-old fable, award-winning and bestselling author Melody Carlson introduces you to two career-focused women who are about to discover that there's more to finding happiness than just switching up the scenery.
