Natalie Walters | 20 Questions: SILENT SHADOWS

amazonbookbubtwittergoodreadsInstagramfacebook

1--What’s the name of your latest release?

Silent Shadows

2--What is it about?

Pecca Gallegos moved to the tiny town of Walton, Georgia, to protect her son and escape the dangerous lifestyle that once defined her. When a series of strange circumstances evolve into threats, Pecca finds herself confiding in an unlikely ally--her stubborn patient.

Army veteran Colton Crawford is desperate to recover from the undiagnosed disorder that is ruining his life, and his instincts are on high alert when threats against his nurse and her son force him to take action. But Colton's involvement only ramps up the danger when he uncovers a family secret revealing that whoever is after Pecca is closer--and more deadly--than they realized.

3--What word best describes your heroine?

Feisty.

4--What makes your hero irresistible?

His vulnerability.

5--Who are the people your main characters turn to when they need help?

Pecca turns to her friends in Walton, who have become like family: Lane, Sheriff Huggins, Ms. Byrdie.

Colton turns to his Uncle Jack and friends, Kekoa Young and Vincent St. James.

6--What do you love about the setting of your book?

Sometimes smalltown living can feel claustrophobic or like a fishbowl, everyone knowing your business but at the same time there’s comfort in realizing those very people will be the ones who protect, love, and share the ups and downs of life with you. I loved creating that small-town feeling!

7--Are you a plotter (follow an outline) or a pantster (write by the seat of your pants)?

Mostly a plotter. I try to outline as much of my story idea before I begin writing it but will inevitably find myself writing scenes by the seat of my pants—usually because of written myself (or my characters) into an impossible corner.

8--What is an ideal writing day for you?

Hmm, this is a good question. I’d love to have 4 hours of uninterrupted writing time every single day. Preferably in the morning so I’d have the rest of the day to catch up on the business side of writing, which always feels so daunting to me.

9--Do you listen to music while you write, need total silence, or do you have the TV on?

I definitely like having background noise on or be in a space where there’s ambient noise like a coffee shop.

10-- How do you approach research?

I try to do enough research to bring a level of authenticity to my story but not overwhelm the reader with unnecessary information. As a military wife, I’ve got a good network of resources who kindly let me harass them with questions and what I can’t get from them, I research online.

11--What is your publishing journey story?

I began writing in 2010 through a mentorship program. Our family was stationed in Cairo, Egypt during that time and when we returned back to the States I signed up for my first writing conference. I pitched the story I had been working on while living in Egypt and received great feedback and requests. Unfortunately, nothing panned out with that manuscript, so I began another while pitching to agents. In 2016 I signed with my agent and we began revising my current manuscript. I pitched Harbored Secrets in 2016 at a writer’s conference and received my first contract in 2017.

12--Do you have critique partners/writing groups you want to give a shout-out to?

Yes!! My critique partner, Emilie Haney is the biggest blessing in my writing career! Without her, my stories would not be what they are today and I’m so grateful to her.

13--What’re the most frustrating things about being an author?

I’ve recently encountered this feeling of wondering whether I’m doing enough. Am I writing enough, fast enough, good enough? Am I doing enough marketing? Am I interacting enough with readers? It’s so hard to find the balance between doing the very best that I can, while being genuine, and trusting God to take care of what I cannot.

14--What’s your favorite scent?

Fresh cut grass. Or dirt after it rains.

15--What movie will you watch no matter what if it’s on TV?

Mary Poppins or The Sound of Music

16--Do you like breakfast, lunch, or dinner best?

Can I get away with saying, “Brunch”?

17--What’s one thing you wish you knew more about?

Technology. As in, how to use it better.

18--What’s the silliest thing you’ve recently done?

Roller skate in my house.

19--What can readers expect from you next?

I’m working on a brand new series that introduces readers to a special agency designed to prevent problems before they become problems. It’s a bit more national and global in scale but I hope to balance that with the quirky team dynamic to create a sense of community that I hope readers will love.

20--How can readers reach you?

I love interacting with readers on social media--so I can be found on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter. Or through my website: www.nataliewalterswriter.com and monthly newsletter!

SILENT SHADOWS by Natalie Walters

Harbored Secrets #3

Silent Shadows

With this suspenseful new story, Natalie Walters welcomes you once more to Walton, Georgia, where everyone knows your name--but no one knows your secret.
