Review: Will alcoholism and hidden secrets in their past define their future?

Gwen Anderson is in the Smoky Mountains doing some research and getting some preliminary photos for a documentary she will be doing for her television station in New York. As she peers down into a mountain stream to shoot a photo, she sees a masked man drop a body into the stream. Her foot causes a slight rock slide and the masked man looks up to see Gwen, then fires a gun at her. She takes off running, only to have him catch up with her at her car. He has her at gunpoint, ready to shot when a group of trail riders from a local dude ranch appear.

Dean Harwell yells at the masked man just as he fires his gun. The shot hits Gwen and the masked man runs into the woods. Dean pursues him, but loses his trail. When he comes back to the parking lot, he discovers that the lady who was shot is his ex-wife. Dean and Gwen have been divorced for five years, and have not seen each other since. That's the way Gwen requested it had to be, and Dean has stuck by her wishes.

As they travel down the mountain road in route to the hospital, the masked man makes another attempt on Gwen's life, shooting the tires of the ambulance and causing it to careen down the side of the mountain. No one is hurt badly, and they all survive the crash. Gwen's gunshot wound is only superficial, so she is released to go home with Dean for protection. As the investigation proceeds, Dean and Gwen tangle with each other about the past and wrestle with what may lay ahead in their future. Can the sheriff find the masked man soon, and can Gwen be careful enough not to reveal her deepest secret to Dean?
