In some series, there’s usually one or two short stories or novellas that are either released in
anthologies, a compilation of shorter stories in one book with other authors or on their own as ebook
shorts. Although set at a lower price, not everyone is a fan of these short style of stories because
they don’t offer the same experience as a full-length novel can. But does that mean you should skip
out on them completely?
My answer is no. Novellas are a great tool to “try” an author out. If you’re new to a series and are
unsure of whether or not you would fit with the author’s voice or enjoy their world, these shorter
stories give you a taste of what to expect and don’t involve too much commitment from the reader. In
contrast, however, if you’re a rabid fan of a particular series, novellas are a nice treat to have to tide
you over until the next full length book release.
The problem with shorter stories is that sometimes they just don’t pack enough punch. I’ve read a
few that come across as more of fillers, however that isn’t to say that all short stories are created
equally. Some of them have the same level of action and suspense, the same amount of sexual
tension and passion as their full-length counterparts so I don’t think it’s wise to entirely write them
off. I’ve come to love some short stories just as much as one of the standard novels. So that is why
this week, I will be recommending some short stories from well-loved authors and series that I think
are worth the look!
I’d love to know your opinions on novellas/short stories. Do you eagerly await them or do you tend to
skip them all together?
DRAGON ON TOP by G.A. Aiken
 DRAGON ON TOP
|
If you’re a fan of the series, then you may already be familiar with
Bram and Glheanna but you may be pleasantly surprised to find that Aiken explores more of her
world and the creatures that inhabit it. I definitely enjoyed reading this one!
About: Try a little dragon
tenderness.
I am Glheanna the Decimator. I am a warrior. A soldier. I know no fear. No pain. No mercy. I do,
however, know acute embarrassment! How could I not after getting dumped by a bastard dragon in
front of my own troops? So I tuck tail and return to my cave, drowning my sorrows in ale—as is my
family’s way. But instead of leaving me to my misery, I’ve been summoned to the Dragon Queen’s
court.
As if my life wasn’t pathetic enough, Her Majesty now has me escorting the highborn Bram the
Merciful through dangerous territories—not exactly the best use of my military training. And just so he
can negotiate with enemy dragons instead of battling them? Honestly, what has my world come to?
Then again…Bram is quite easy on the eyes. And the perfect distraction for what ails me. Perhaps I’m
looking at all this the wrong way. Maybe there is a place for a little “mercy” in my life…

STROKE OF MIDNIGHT by Lara Adrian
 STROKE OF MIDNIGHT
|
Fans of Adrian will already know that she pens some tightly-
written stories. Lots of suspense, lots of action and romance and that’s why I’m confident when I say
that Adrian delivers some of the best written shorter stories out there. Her ability to get straight to the
point and hit all the right notes makes me excited for this novella in the acclaimed Midnight Breed
series.
About: Born to a noble
Breed lineage steeped in exotic ritual and familial duty, vampire warrior Jehan walked away from the
luxurious trappings of his upbringing in Morocco to join the Order’s command center in Rome.
But when a generations-old obligation calls Jehan home, the reluctant desert prince finds himself
thrust into an unwanted handfasting with Seraphina, an unwilling beauty who’s as determined as he is
to resist the antiquated pact between their families.
Yet as intent as they are to prove their incompatibility, neither can deny the attraction that ignites
between them. And as Jehan and Seraphina fight to resist the calling of their blood, a deadly enemy
seeks to end their uneasy truce before it even begins….

BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN by Darynda Jones
 BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN
|
The Charley Davidson series is told strictly from the heroine’s POV
so what is interesting about this particular novella is that the author is writing it from the hero’s POV.
Not only is this a fantastic and unique idea, but it also gives greater insight into Reyes’s character.
About: All his life, Reyes
Alexander Farrow has suffered the torments of the damned. Only one thing has given him hope: the
woman who radiates a light that no mortals can see; a light that only the departed can see...
Told from his point of view, BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN chronicles the first time Reyes ever
encountered Charley, and how their relationship has been the one thing that can either save him or
doom him.
