1--What is the title of your latest release?
NIGHT FOR DAY. It’s my first fantasy and set in a different universe than my previous three books.
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
You and your ex are stuck in separate magical escape rooms trapped with ghosts and gods, and the only way out is to work together.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
Before the pandemic, I was lucky enough to visit London. We stayed in the Westminster area, and this is the setting of Night for Day. I wanted a different cosmopolitan city that my American characters are dropped into.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
I would totally hang out with Camille and Ward! Granted, I’d prefer to hang out with them after they had figured out their relationship. I don’t think anyone wants to be around two bickering exes unless they’re sadistic.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
For Camille: determined, practical, and driven; while Ward is charming, optimistic, and empathetic.
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I’ve learned to stretch beyond my comfort zone. The past three books were magical realism and based more in our reality than Night for Day. As a reader, fantasy was a first love of mine, followed closely by romance. This is a book I’ve always wanted to write and had been itching to get out of my cluttered brain.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I always edit while I draft. I don’t like the idea of leaving the document in a messy state. The messy draft method leaves my brain itchy.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
It is always oysters—specifically, Kumamoto. The buttery, rich flavor of these mollusks sing on my tongue.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
My office is a small room with a bookcase and artwork that also doubles as my studio because I’m also an artist. The walls are painted a blush pink with white trim. The L shaped desk is flanked by a rolling book cart and a closet of supplies. I keep a corkboard of current and future projects above my monitor—think of it like the flight tracker board you see in airports.
10--Who is an author you admire?
I admire Neil Gaiman and Madeline Miller. Neil is so prolific and writes across so many categories yet his trademark writing voice is unmistakable to any reader whether they are reading a picture book or a short story. Madeline Miller is an atmospheric writer that captures Greek mythology so well. As a mythology geek, my favorite book is Circe.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
It would have to be The Hobbit. Papa Tolkien got his hooks into me by writing a character who loves food as much as I do! From there, I read the Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. Of course, I prefer the Silmarillion because it’s a creation myth.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I got the call when I was at my kid’s swimming lessons. Since I usually am unable to digest good news properly, it didn’t hit me until a day or two later. When I got the offer call from my agent, I puked right after.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
Lately it has been horror. I love to be spooked and have been acquainting myself with Clive Barker and Sylvia Moreno-Garcia.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
Studio Ghibli’s The Cat Returns. This is a very quirky offering featuring a girl who rescues a cat prince and is thrown into the Cat Kingdom, all the while falling in love with the cat Baron. I love cats and would love to be the main character of this film.
15--What is your favorite season?
I love autumn because of the enchanting smell of burning leaves and the gorgeous palette nature provides. I prefer it when the temperature is not too hot or cold.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I eat! I’m hoping this year I can buy a Sansrival cake. It’s a Filipino cake that has rich buttercream between meringue layers and tons of cashew.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I totally recommend A Murder At the End of the World by Brit Marling and Zal Batmangli, the creators of the OA. It’s such a surprising and twisty mystery that I think will captivate any watcher looking for something refreshing.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
All of them! Seriously. It’s like making me pick which kitten is cuter!
19--What do you do when you have free time?
I draw. Lately, I’ve been sketching food using alcohol markers and ink. It’s a great way for me to get back to my artistic roots. I went to art school for a year before switching to a History/Humanities major.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
My YA culinary fantasy, Celestial Banquet, comes out January 2025 by Zando. This is Iron Chef meets Lore - cooking, monsters, gods, a deadly competition. I can’t wait for young readers and loyal readers to meet Cai, my hotheaded noodle cook.

Roselle Lim was born in the Philippines and immigrated to Canada as a child. She lived in north Scarborough in a diverse, Asian neighbourhood. She found her love of writing by listening to her lola (paternal grandmother's) stories about Filipino folktales. Growing up in a household where Chinese superstition mingled with Filipino Catholicism, she devoured books about mythology, which shaped the fantasies in her novels. An artist by nature, she considers writing as "painting with words."
