1--What is the title of your latest release?

THE OTHER SIDE OF LOVE

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A woman is given a second chance at love in her forties, challenging everything she thought she knew about happy-ever-afters, trust and relationships.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The Other Side of Love is partly based on a true story so it was easy for me to choose the location. The character Victoria relies on the strict routine of her London life to give her a sense of security. She’d be a different person without London.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

No! I don’t think we’d get on. I’m a huge believer in true love and fairy tales but Victoria is the total opposite. However, I do love her sarcasm and penchant for cupcakes and Friends so for those reasons she would be fun to be around. Also, as the story progresses her bravery is something that would hugely inspire me in real life.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Blunt, strong but vulnerable (deep down)

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

In life or relationships, facing the truth can be tough but it’s the only way we can find happiness in the end.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I wait until I’m totally done. Or if I’m honest, that’s the rule but sometimes I allow exceptions. I find myself going over a chapter and I have to stop myself and write the next one instead. It’s so tempting but I find I work better when I write fast and edit slow.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Anything sweet. I have so many yummy treats flying around in my head right now but I’m going to settle on cheesecake or a victoria sponge cake with lots of jam and icing.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

A coffee shop. Being out rather than at home helps me to write faster and keep focused. Plus, I have two toddlers who are very loud!

10--Who is an author you admire?

Carrie Elks. Her recent series the Salinger Brothers is everything.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

The Wind up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. I have never read a book like it. His writing made me feel like I wasn’t alone – it felt like the voice in my head was on the pages of this book. I can’t explain it but everything he wrote made so much sense to me and made everything feel clearer.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I’m self-published so that was a huge decision for me. I’d wanted to be classically published all my life, but I started taking more workshops and reading about authors I loved who were self-published. I got excited when one author said she wouldn’t have it any other way – she loved each stage of the self-publishing process and loved the control she had. Designing the front cover and taking a front seat in the marketing side of things has been amazing and made me feel closer to readers.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Romcom. Every time. I do occasionally like fantasy fiction like Phillip Pullman’s Northern Lights, though. I love that series.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Clueless. I’ve based so many of my outfits and life rules on Cher!

15--What is your favorite season?

Summer. I like it when it’s so hot I can’t think. Everything just feels slower and more relaxed.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

With my family and a very big cake. Last year we went to Portugal which felt extra special. We found a cake shop on the promenade that sold huge strawberry cakes so I was in my element!

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Strictly Business by Carrie Elks because the buildup is full of sexual tension and the main characters are so loveable.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Thai

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I read to my daughters or bake together.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

An Othello inspired romance following the story of Marcus. Readers want to know more about his past and I’m so excited to be able to do that!

THE OTHER SIDE OF LOVE by Matilda Swinney

The Other Side of Love

Victoria's nine year relationship is coming to an end. She can feel it. It's not that she's giving up, but no amount of detective work, complaining to her best friend, Sienna, or stilted conversations with her fiancé about the lack of sex in their relationship is going to save them now.

Anyway, she's got plenty of guys fawning over her and a lifetime of Prada bags and Cartier to keep her busy. She doesn't need love. And as her mum would say - "Happy ever afters are fairy tales and nothing more."

So, when the stone cold, annoyingly beautiful and utterly charming, Amara, enters Victoria's life during her weekly Thursday night out with Sienna, she's the last person to expect anything to happen. She's not interested in a new relationship, falling in love or fairy tales. And least of all with a woman who's stuck up flawless persona is threatening to ruin her carefully orchestrated life.

But as Victoria is about to learn, love has a way of finding you, especially when you need it the most.

There's a lot more to Amara than effortless good looks, and if Victoria will allow it, there's a lot more to love, too.

The question is - Does she have the courage to let go of everything she's ever known in the quest of true love? Or should she call it a day, run a nice hot bath and agree with her mum that fairy tales are a load of BS to keep the faint hearted happy?
