Serial killer Eric Spears isn't finished with Deputy Chief Jess Harris and he's bent on ruining her most precious memories and destroying those closest to her. Always one step behind, Jess can't shake the fear that Spears' network of fans is far more powerful than she'd first believed. When she's called in to investigate the unrelated vicious murders of two young women who've had their hearts removed, Jess knows that in order to find justice for these women, she has to push aside her fear and do her job. But can this new case be part of Spears's plan to destroy her?
VICIOUS by Debra Webb is the seventh book in the Faces of Evil series. For the last year, I've been told how great Webb's novels are. Fantastic, terrifying, chilling, and a must read are some of the ways she's been described. For one reason or another (mainly my to-be-read-list grows exponentially) I've put off reading any of her novels until now. I could just kick myself! VICIOUS has everything; suspense, mystery, romance, and unexpected plot twists. I could barely set the story aside once I started reading. I can't wait to read the first six books I missed and there's a new addition to the series coming out in March.
For me, VICIOUS really excels when it focuses on the details of the investigation. Webb gives no detail that isn't important. All the little parts of the puzzle, the seemingly unconnected actions, and the choice of words is carefully crafted to push the story forward. All the clues are there, but Webb still manages to surprise her readers by connecting those clues in unexpected ways. The characters are all hiding something. It's so much fun to try and unravel the motivations and actions for all the characters to see which side of the line they fall on.
VICIOUS by Debra Webb is a superb thriller that will not disappoint. Intricately plotted, unexpected plot twists, emotionally high stakes, and a killer who has nothing to lose make this one of the best novels I've read this year.
