MIND GAMES is by far the best book I have read this year. I've always loved Nora's books and this one hooked me from page one. Once I started reading I couldn't put MIND GAMES down. I found myself cheering for Thea and hoping she could get past all the tragic things she saw in her life. Be prepared to do nothing once you start reading her heartbreaking tale. The twists and turns just kept on coming and hooked me from the very first chapter!
MIND GAMES is a romantic suspense novel. The main character, Thea, has psychic powers so there is a paranormal touch to this heart-pounding story! Thea and Rem get to stay at their Grammie's house, in the Appalachia of Kentucky for two weeks, every summer, while their parents have some alone time back in Virginia. During this time, Thea wakes up shaken and running for Grammie, because of what she just saw in her nightmare. Grammie Lucy saw it too, but not as much as Thea and she is sitting on the edge of her bed crying. They both have the gift, the gift of being able to see things as they happen, in their mind. Thea finds herself connected to the killer who murdered her parents as he has a form of a gift as well.
MIND GAMES is such an emotional and heart-shredding story. My heart broke for Thea over and over. Needless to say, the story brings a strong emotional response. So keep the tissues handy. MIND GAMES will stay with you for a long time after you finish reading it. There were several times I found myself desperately wanting to keep reading, to find out what would happen next, but I was afraid to turn the page, scared of the possible fates awaiting these characters. Nora Roberts has a magical way of telling dramatic stories about women, friendship and family. She does a super job of making you feel the emotions the characters are experiencing, familiarizing you with the settings and the motivations of the story and just simply making you FEEL. Whether it be sadness, anger, love or disgust you get to crawl into some of the characters' lives and see the story through their perspective.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Fresh Fiction. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Identity presents a suspenseful new novel of tragedy and trauma, love and family, and the evil that awaits.
As they do each June, the Foxes have driven the winding roads of Appalachia to drop off their children for a two-week stay at their grandmother’s. Here, twelve-year-old Thea can run free and breathe in the smells of pine and fresh bread and Grammie’s handmade candles. But as her parents head back to suburban Virginia, they have no idea they’re about to cross paths with a ticking time bomb.
Back in Kentucky, Thea and her grandmother Lucy both awaken from the same nightmare. And though the two have never discussed the special kind of sight they share, they know as soon as their tearful eyes meet that something terrible has happened.
The kids will be staying with Grammie now in Redbud Hollow, and thanks to Thea’s vision, their parents’ killer will spend his life in supermax. Over time, Thea will make friends, build a career, find love. But that ability to see into minds and souls still lurks within her, and though Grammie calls it a gift, it feels more like a curse—because the inmate who shattered her childhood has the same ability. Thea can hear his twisted thoughts and witness his evil acts from miles away. He knows it, and hungers for vengeance. A long, silent battle will be waged between them—and eventually bring them face to face, and head to head…
