Nikan Lawless is a lupine shifter who has always had the hots for Esperanze “Essie” Cardona. Unfortunately, she has put him in the friend zone and he doesn’t want to ruin that. His perfect chance to change her mind comes when she is attending a conference and he is her bodyguard. He had some great ideas, but everyone knows how plans go.
Essie has no idea of Nikan’s plans, but at the conference, a former professor of hers asks for help and she is determined to help him. So, you have lupines trying to help a vampire while one lupine wants to get his lady to admit she loves him as more than a friend.
LOVER’S INSTINCT by Katie Reus is a lighthearted fun novella, with a bit of action and danger rolled in for more fun, in the Moon Shifter series. This is a rerelease from 2012 and because this is my first time reading it, I cannot tell you if there are any updates to the storyline.
What I can tell you is that it is a great paranormal romance with a good bit of suspense and action on the side. Nikan and Essie are well-fleshed-out, likable characters and the perfect match for one another even though Essie is a nerd beta and Nikan is an alpha warrior. She believes he would do better with a stronger mate. Luckily, Nikan is undeterred and knows what he wants and uses everything he can to convince her otherwise – including canceling one of the rooms so they share his.
LOVER’S INSTINCT is a novella, but it is full of everything one loves about a Katie Reus book. Also, even though this book is part of the Moon Shifter series it can be read as a standalone; Ms. Reus gives enough background to understand who these people are, where they are in the world, and what they are doing and feeling.
If you love shifters, a sweet yet steamy romance, action, danger, and intrigue are all rolled up in this fantastic short story. If you are new to this author or re-reading an old favorite, now is the time to grab LOVER’S INSTINCT!
