Romance Western

HE’S MY COWBOY is a group effort by three terrific storytellers Diana Palmer, Rebecca Zanetti, and Delores Fossen. The central themes are, of course, love and cowboys. What you expect from some of the best western romance authors. As a long-time fan, I have read many by Diana Palmer, several by Delores Fossen, and now my first by Rebecca Zanetti. That is part of the joy of reading a book constructed of individual stories: reconnecting with old favorites and meeting new ones.

First up is Diana Palmer’s "The Hawk's Shadow." The identity of a body that has been buried for many years s accidentally unearthed and destined to unleash havoc in a small town where everyone knows just about every other person and rumors fly quickly. Because all that is left is the skeleton, Undersheriff Gil Barnes must bring in a forensic anthropologist. The state sends in a new investigator Nemara Landreth. Each was underwhelmed by their first impressions of the other, but as a team, they are committed to being professional and working together to discover whose body had been found. A lot of information can be gathered by talking to longtime residents and finding out what any of them can remember in regard to any missing persons reports. This leads to quite the adventure for Gil and Nemara, who are quite different but share the same goal. Diana Palmer injects her own brand of humor into this entertaining novella.

The second offering is Rebecca Zanetti’s "Rescue: Rancher Style," a story of new beginnings. The stars of this novella are Tara Webber and her ex, Greg Simson. They had separated right after high school. Greg goes off to the Marines and Tara is left behind nursing a broken heart. Greg returns to town to take custody of his two nephews and niece. This charming novella has an interesting cast of characters--including a wolf named Harley. Greg is learning how difficult it is to rein in three teenagers, help them with their grief, and keep them out of trouble. Because of Greg's military background, he runs the house just as you would expect, and he needs an element of softness to round out his roughness. This is where Tara comes in. Many unexpected trials and tribulations later, we hold out hope for this unique little family. Rebecca Zanetti incorporates family drama with some serious events in this novella packed with adventure.

Last but certainly not least is Delores Fossen’s contribution, "A Cowboy Kind of Romance." Ah, love is in the air, and in Loveland, Texas, it is actually the town’s theme. It seems like the whole town has a vested interest in the couple, Brenna and Theo. Brenna is returning from the military. A tough injury has made it impossible for Theo to return to rodeo. They certainly are not entertaining any thought of rekindling an old high school romance. But in Loveland, hearts and fairy dust abound...

HE’S MY COWBOY is a delightful collection of three beautifully written novellas, each constructed with care and love. This reminded me of those wonderful romance comic books of old, full of endearing characters. Lots to enjoy in HE’S MY COWBOY.
