Meren is a twin to the next queen of her people, she is the hidden one. Her only job is to act as her sister if there is danger. So she lives a quiet life, only appearing as her sister on occasion. But the queen suddenly dies and the princess is given a proposal of marriage by someone Meren doesn't trust. Then Meren is kidnapped by Reven, a shadow magician, and while trying to escape to protect her sister she learns some truths about THE LIAR'S CROWN and it is going to put many lives in danger.
I am not normally a fan of young adult reads, but as THE LIAR'S CROWN is by Abigail Owen, one of my go-to writers, I thought I would give it a try. I am glad I did as I enjoyed this crazy world Ms. Owen has developed. The characters are well written and amazing and even some you won't be sure whether they are good, evil, or somewhere in between. The dialogue, especially that between Reven and Meren, is especially fun to read as it fits well with the young adult message.
Reven is struggling to control the shadows he wields and Meren just wants the truth. Though she has always wanted just to be a simple girl with less drama and danger in her life but knows that she must do whatever it takes to protect her sister. Together they work to get rid of a common enemy - the man who wants to marry her sister - the Princess.
I will have to warn readers that the ending will have them gasping for their breath. It is really unexpected and well done. And, of course, leaves readers wanting the next offering in this series - right now!
Everything about my life is a lie. As a hidden twin princess, born second, I have only one purpose—to sacrifice my life for my sister if death comes for her. I’ve been living under the guise of a poor, obscure girl of no standing, slipping into the palace and into the role of the true princess when danger is present.
Now the queen is dead and the ageless King Eidolon has sent my sister a gift—an eerily familiar gift—and a proposal to wed. I don’t trust him, so I do what I was born to do and secretly take her place on the eve of the coronation. Which is why, when a figure made of shadow kidnaps the new queen, he gets me by mistake.
As I try to escape, all the lies start to unravel. And not just my lies. The Shadowraith who took me has secrets of his own. He struggles to contain the shadows he wields—other faces, identities that threaten my very life.
Winter is at the walls. Darkness is looming. And the only way to save my sister and our dominion is to kill Eidolon…and the Shadowraith who has stolen my heart.
