Colleen Law has always known she was strange - she hears things others can't. As a young woman she had helped rescue a woman she heard screaming - only the woman was unconscious and couldn't be screaming. She can also talk to and see the dead. What can a woman do who hears the SOUND OF DARKNESS? She joins the F.B.I. and the Krewe of Hunters.
The F.B.I. is after a missing person - and leading the team is Special Agents Mark Gallagher, his dog Red and Ragnor Johansen. With a little finesse they rescue the woman with the perp screaming that he will sue them. Hoping this will finish the missing woman and the "Embracer" they are horrified when they get a call of another missing woman. Mark will leave his partner Ragnor and join a newbie partner in search of this woman. Though they begin rocky - he doesn't know why he must work with a rookie and isn't exactly nice about it - they manage to rescue the woman before she suffocates. Thus begins a very twisted road to finding out who is the real Embracer or is it a copycat.
SOUND OF DARKNESS will have you literally holding your breath a few times! If the man they caught isn't the real killer then who among all the characters could it be. The historian, the rich boyfriend, the musician ex-boyfriend or did they have the right guy in the first place? You will be as surprised as I was (and I got it half right) as I love to play detective as I read along.
The romance between Colleen and Mark is rather sweet, rushed but then when danger calls the heart often does a fast fall. There is a lot happening in SOUND OF DARKNESS, so I would suggest you put aside some time, and read carefully. There is also, as always when it comes to anything by author Heather Graham a good hit of history, amazing visual words that make you see all around you - thus making you a part of the Krewe. A fascinating fantastic read as always!
Women are being taken in Virginia, and FBI agent Mark Gallagher is determined to put a stop to it. Certain he’s closing in on the killer known as The Embracer, Mark is less than thrilled when he’s partnered with rookie agent Colleen Law, worried she’s a liability when there’s so much at stake.
But like everyone in the Krewe of Hunters, Colleen has talents that extend beyond the usual investigative toolbox. She can hear the voices of the victims in her head, and they’re telling her she and Mark are near to uncovering the truth.
When Mark’s prime suspect takes a liking to Colleen, he’s surprisingly protective of his new partner, even as he admits her connection to the victims is key. But tense interrogations turn dangerously personal when someone close to Colleen goes missing, luring the agents deep into the shadows of wooded rural Virginia, where nobody can hear them scream.
