DON'T TRUST A KILLER is the first book in Cynthia Eden's Dark Sins series. In this story, Cynthia Eden revisits her frequent setting of New Orleans and crafts another tale of death and eroticism mixed together in a way that only she can. Kace Quick is known as a powerful and dangerous man in New Orleans, and local and federal authorities would love to take him down on any charge. FBI agent Grayson Wesley would love to pin the recent murders done by "The New Orleans Strangler" on Kace, and he enlists the help of agent Bree Harlow. What Grayson could never imagine is that Bree and Kace would fall in love and that together they would capture the real killer.
Cynthia Eden's books are usually peppered with allusions to classic horror films, and Bree Harlow definitely gives off a "Clarice Starling" from SILENCE OF THE LAMBS vibe. Bree is no stranger to danger or killers. Bree's family was murdered, and that experience changed her forever. It also gave her something in common with Kace. Kace was tried for the murder of an old girlfriend when he was a young man. Both Bree and Kace have faced the consequences of murder and dealt with survivor's guilt and suspicion, and it has made them stronger. In DON'T TRUST A KILLER, Cynthia Eden shows how "dangerous" doesn't always equal "evil," but that evil can be hiding in plain sight. The sexual tension, as Bree initially plays a cat and mouse game with Kace, as she tries to go undercover is exquisite. I liked the alternating perspectives in this story, including the unknown killer's. There's not really a moment in which Bree ever believes Kace is the serial killer, but she does wrestle with the concept of trust as it applies to any kind of romantic relationship, and she has her own demons to exorcise. Cynthia Eden keeps readers on their toes with betrayal coming from unexpected sources, and twists and turns galore.
DON'T TRUST A KILLER is one electrifying surprise after another, and a romance with a fiery intensity. Things are expectedly off-the-charts hot between this hero and heroine, and I like the things they discover they have in common. It's cool seeing characters from Cynthia Eden's Lost series pop up in DON'T TRUST A KILLER. I look forward to Cynthia Eden's next heart-stopping tale of romantic suspense.
To catch a killerβ¦you have to use the perfect bait.
FBI Agent Bree Harlow is working the biggest case of her
career. Sheβs undercover on the hunt for a killer who has
murdered three womenβand she isnβt going to stop until she
brings down her prey. Sheβs scored a job at Fantasy, the
hottest club in New Orleans, and sheβs just caught the
attention of the clubβs owner, the sexy and dangerous Kace
Quick. Everyone knows the guy is shadyβand probably linked
to every criminal activity in the Big Easy. She shouldnβt
find him so attractive. Shouldnβt want to do anything but
lock the guy away. After all, he is her chief suspect.
Be carefulβ¦sometimes, you canβt see the danger coming.
Kace knows there is far more to Bree than meets the eye. He
isnβt a fool, and he can spot a Fed from a mile away, though
he does admit that Bree is the sexiest FBI agent heβs ever
seen. He lets her play her game, though Kace plans to keep
his hands very far off his gorgeous new problem. Then the
attacks begin. Attacks all focused on Bree. And suddenly,
itβs not a game any longer because Kace isnβt about to let
his FBI agent get caught in the crossfire.
To hurt a man, you have to destroy what he wants most.
Kace has a powerful enemy working in the darknessβa man who
wants to destroy Kace by making him look guilty as hell.
Kace is being set up for murders he didnβt commit. And now,
the killer has locked onto his next victimβBree. Despite
Kaceβs best efforts, he has let Bree get too close. For the
first time in years, Kace cares about someone elseβa fatal
flaw. And the killer in the dark canβt wait to make Kace pay
for past sinsβ¦The killer thinks he can hurt Bree, and by
hurting her, the mighty Kace Quick will fall.
Things arenβt always as they appearβ¦
Bree wonβt be anyoneβs victim. Sheβs not the damsel in
distressβsheβs the woman ready to take down a murderer.
Sheβll break every rule in the FBIβs precious handbook in
order to protect the lover she knows is innocent. Kace is
hers, and Bree wonβt let anyone hurt him. Sheβll catch the
real killer, sheβll prove his guilt, and maybe, just maybe,
Bree and Kace can stop their world from going down in flames.
