Mystery | Thriller Legal

Francine Day is a divorce lawyer. Francine really loves her job, until she is asked to represent Martin Joy in his divorce from his wife, Donna. The big problem is the sparks between Francine and Martin. Francine knows that it's against the rules to start anything with a client, but Martin feels the same way about Francine, and their affair starts.

Everything is going fine until Donna doesn't show up for the hearing. At first, no one thinks anything of it until several days later, and no one has heard from her. Now the police are involved in this missing person case. Of course, the first suspect will be Martin. Martin could lose a lot of money in this divorce. Some secrets do come out, like the fact that Martin had dinner with Donna the night before her disappearance. The other secret is that Francine is so obsessed with Martin, she followed him and Donna that night. Worst of all, she got drunk and doesn't remember anything until the next morning when she wakes up in her neighbor Pete's apartment.

Now Francine is doing everything she can to help Martin by keeping their affair a secret, but she still doesn't remember that night. To make matters worse, Pete is threatening Francine, claiming he will go to the police unless she sleeps with him. As more evidence starts to stack up against Martin, Francine knows that the secrets must come out. Along with all of this, a private investigator that Francine works with has told her that Donna was having a fling with Alex, Martin's business partner. So who is the real Martin, and can Francine ever trust him again?

Wow is all I can say about MINE! J.L. Butler writes a terrific thriller. At one point I was pretty sure I knew who did it. Boy, was I wrong. Butler has a way of making almost every character look like they are the one who did it. There are a few other characters in this book that play small yet big parts in this novel. Francine has a friend Claire, who, even though she had her own problems, was there for Francine. Martin's business partner Alex was also important to the story in an unexpected way. Butler also gives very good clues as to who might have done this. However, some of the clues are not going to help you figure it out. I read this book in two days, that is how great it is. Butler's background in law and journalism really make this book feel authentic. Make sure you pick up MINE, it will not disappoint you.

SUMMARY

In this riveting tale of psychological suspense, a divorce lawyer risks her career, her sanity, and her life when she falls into an illicit, all-consuming affair with her client —who becomes the primary suspect in his estranged wife’s sudden disappearance Young divorce lawyer Francine Day has methodically built her career doing everything right. She’s one big case away from securing her place among London’s legal elite. But when she meets her new client, Martin Joy, the natural caution that has protected Francine and fueled her rise melts away. Powerless to fight the irresistible magnetism between them, client and counsel tumble into a blistering affair that breaks every rule. Though Martin insists his marriage is over, Francine doesn’t quite believe him. Certain details he’s told her don’t quite add up. Consumed with a passion she cannot control and increasingly obsessed with Martin’s relationship with his wife, Donna, Francine follows the woman one night . . . and discovers her having dinner with her supposedly soon-to-be-ex-husband. The next morning, Francine awakens in her neighbor’s apartment with blood on her clothes and no recollection of what transpired after she spied Donna and Martin together. Then Francine receives more devastating news: Martin’s wife has vanished. That dinner was the last place anyone has seen Donna Joy alive. Suddenly, Francine finds herself caught in a dangerous labyrinth of deception, lies, and secrets, in which one false move could lead to her undoing. What happened that night and why can’t Francine remember? Where is Donna and who is responsible for her disappearance? The further Francine goes to find answers, the tighter the net seems to draw—around her lover, herself, and the life she’s meticulously built.

Ok. When the pro reviewer is fooled, then it has to be good!
Thanks.

Wow! What an exciting book description! I haven't read this yet, but it seems to me that Francine shouldn't trust Martin. I think he could lie to her. In any case, I believe that Francine made a huge mistake when she began a romantic relationship with her client before his divorce process was over. I think that she should have helped him finish all his affairs, and only then think about her feelings for him. By the way, if Martin and Donna used the services of OnlineDivorcer, such problems could have been avoided.
