Ethan Gingerich lost his brother and sister in law in a thunderstorm. He brought his two nephews and niece to live with him. Ethan is a logger and can't work that job with children around him. He has his hands full. He needs help. He also has had his heart broken and has no interest or need to find another woman to break his heart. THE AMISH NANNY is the heart warming story of Ethan and how lost he is taking care of three children. He asks God for help in finding his way to do right by these children. You will find yourself cheering for Ethan but first, you will want to take him and shake some sense into him.
Clara Barkman, we met in another of Patricia David's stories, Shepard's Bride. She is oldest of four girls. Her uncle raised them after their parents died. He beat them and did not treat them right. She was being forced to marry a mean way older man to protect her sisters. They got a way from him and went to live with their grandfather in the Amish community of Hope Springs, Ohio. Clara knows one thing for sure. She has no interest in ever getting married. Clara wants to be a teacher until she decides to take the job as a nanny.
Lily is around three, Amos four, and Micah eight when they come to live with their Uncle Ethan. Micah has lots of anger issues. Ethan did not want the kids broken up so he agreed to take them, but he is not prepared to be a father. Lily and Amos take to Clara right off. They are all grieving. But Micah is the one who Clara really feels a kinship to. She remembers what she was going through before she was taken in by her grandfather. Micah pulls at Clara's heart and all she wants to do is teach him that not everyone is bad and that he is worthy of being loved again.
Patricia Davids love of the Amish people really shines through and will pull you right in while you are reading THE AMISH NANNY and never let you to until the very last page. I devoured this quick read and can't wait to continue with this series, Brides of Amish County. I strongly recommend THE AMISH NANNY to anyone who loves Amish stories as well as anyone who enjoys books about characters who struggle to overcome life's greatest challenges.
THE AMISH NANNY is a journey of emotions; happiness, sadness, joy, torment, and is bound to have you crying at one point or another. The Amish are real people with real problems just like everyone else. Amish fiction has a special place in my heart and Patricia Davids is always one of the authors I look for when I want to read a book in this genre.
