ON THE GROWL is a fun and sexy collection of novellas by Celia Kyle, Lynn Red, Jessica Sims, Flora Dare, and Marina Maddix. All of the stories are one-on-one romances except for the mΓ©nage by Flora Dare. I like the variety of shifters in these stories -- rabbits, bears, eagle, wolves, tigers, and more. I also appreciated the fact that the stories were all extremely hot, but had an equal dose of humor to balance the heat. Except for Celia Kyle and Jessica Sims, the authors in this anthology are new to me. I'm extremely happy to discover some new authors.
"Tiger by the Tail" takes place in the world of Jessica Sims's Midnight Liaisons series. I'm a big fan of this series and Jessica Sims does not disappoint. Mandy Petersen went on a date and got turned into a were-tiger. Though grossly unfair, this brings her into the orbit of the very sexy Adrian Merino. "Tiger by the Tail" is full of sexual tension and teasing between Mandy and Adrian. As much as I love the sexiness, what I really like about this story is that Adrian is able to empathize with Mandy. The fact that he can do that and realize how so many of her choices have been taken away from her, make him more than just eye candy.
"Waking Up Were" by Celia Kyle is another story about a woman bitten and changed into a shifter against her will. However, unlike in "Tiger by the Tail" by Jessica Sims, Brenna was bitten by a rogue werewolf. Declan is a little different than the other heroes in this anthology. He is the alpha of the Swan Mountain werewolf pack. He is immediately possessive of Brenna once he finds she has been turned, but I feel like he is never aggressive with her. I think it's an important distinction. The romance between Brenna and Declan is red hot.
"Bear Your Teeth" takes place in Lynn Red's Jamesburg Shifters series and has the unlikely pairing of a rabbit shifter and a bear shifter. However, the attraction between Rika and Thor is intense. Like the story by Jessica Sims, I like that Rika and Thor connect on an emotional as well as sexual level. In addition to the steamy consummation of countless fantasies they've had about each other, Rika and Thor open up to each other about their family life. The emotional intimacy is sweet and gives the story some depth.
"To Screech His Own" starts a new series by Marina Maddix centering on Haven Resort -- a resort specifically for shifters in a lush tropical setting. I love bird shifters but I rarely see stories that focus on them, so I was happy that the hero of "To Screech His Own" is an eagle shifter. The romance in this story was great and I find the resort and the enigmatic Mr. Roarke fascinating. I look forward to more stories in this series.
