ROCK ADDICTION is book one in the new contemporary series
Rock
Kiss by paranormal romance goddess Nalini Singh.
Nalini is
one of my very tip-top favorite writers for her
Psy/Changling books and also for her Guild Hunter books.
The author name on the cover did keep me reading the book
to
the end of the story, but this is a very different feel
than
her PNR books.
It is billed as a contemporary romance, but reads like a
New
Adult genre book. There is the 'hot rock star meets
normal
down-to-earth-girl and falls in love' trope. Rock stars
seem to be the new billionaires these days. There is the
'heavily experienced sex god initiates a virgin' trope
used
here. There's also the Instalove trope that bursts into
flower on page 20. Molly, a 24 year old sweet and
adorable
good girl, gives up her virginity immediately to Zachary
Fox, the lead singer for rock band Schoolboy Choir, making
the decision to do so 3 pages after meeting him for the
first time. I never really bought in to why Fox pursued
Molly so immediately and relentlessly, so while much of
ROCK ADDICTION was entertaining, it did not captivate me.
Molly had a major family drama in her life at age 15 that
left her convinced that she wanted a staid and boring
life.
She was conditioned to feel any kind of attention was her
worst nightmare. When Fox pursues Molly, she originally
agrees to one night together. Fox somehow knows that one
night with Molly will never be enough, and so he gets
Molly
to concede to a one month affair while his band is in New
Zealand, with her condition that their affair remain
secret.
Fox never plans on ending their affair at the one month
mark and so pursues Molly very cannily (which felt a bit
stalkerish to me). They slowly get to know each other
outside the bedroom, providing a nice counterpoint to all
the activity between the sheets. They have a hot and very
active sex life which is detailed lovingly and at great
length.
Fox's life as a celebrity with his many groupies and the
stalking paparazzi pushed many of Molly's trigger buttons,
generating a great deal of angst and drama. Nalini did a
good job of explaining Molly's hesitancy and made it seem
logical based on her past, but I did feel that Molly was
somewhat immature in her behavior, which was frustrating.
The author does deliver her classic alpha hero, with a
sexy lip
ring, smokin' tattoos, and a voice like whiskey and sin.
While I found myself entertained by the story, I did not
love ROCK ADDICTION. I felt the story was aimed at a 19-
25 year old
demographic. Fans of Nalini Singh who compulsively read
all
of her works will want to try this. Those who love rock
stars romances and New Adult instalove will also probably
love ROCK ADDICTION. While I will definitely read the
next in
the series, I will adjust my expectations accordingly.
