Violet McGinn has moved as far away as possible from her
mother, both in terms of geography and philosophy. Violet
left Portland, Oregon for Portland, Maine where she works as
an account; very practical and logical. Now she's back to
care for her New Age loving psychic mother who has several
broken bones after a bad fall. It's up to Violet to keep her
mother's shop running which includes filling in as the
resident psychic. Violet believes she has no-supernatural
talent but finds unusual assistance from the music coming
from the bar next door.
Drew Watson owns the adjoining bar (don't call it a strip
club even if he does host a male revue several nights a
week). He's not a fan of the psychic next door but thinks
her daughter is pretty hot. Their mutual attraction, shared
space, and love of eighties music keep throwing them
together. Can Violet see past the cute and practical doctor
she thinks should be right for her to the handsome and
complicated man who might be what she needs?
BELIEVE IT OR NOT is charming, funny, and just a little bit
sexy. Drew and Violet make a good couple that brings out
the best in each other. Violet's mom and her friends
provide a colorful contrast to Drew and Violet's more
cerebral approach to life. The challenges Violet faces as
she figures out what she really wants out of life add a dash
of humor to strengthen the plot. I think the story would
have benefited from an expanded sub-plot to flesh out some of
the supporting characters and take some of the burden off of
the main story. The use of music to connect Violet, Drew,
and their businesses was a clever twist.
Numbers never lie, so Violet McGinn found safe haven in the
most boring profession she could find. Until her renowned
psychic mother lands in the hospital and Violet has to run
her business. Now you can have your taxes filed and your
aura read, in one convenient location.
Do you believe in...music?
Drew Watson is the jaded owner of the local hot spot next
door, and doesn't need a single thing except a good crowd to
dance to what he's spinning on Saturday night.
Do you believe in...love?
The only thing Violet and Drew seem to have in common is
that neither believes in that psychic hoo—hah. Except
Drew seems to play exactly the right song at exactly the
right time. And truth be told, it makes Violet's heart dance
just a little ...
