Romance Historical

Phoebe Vale was offered the job of paid companion during the house party of one of her former students. Phoebe is a teacher in an elite school for young women. The chance to enjoy a lifestyle so far removed from her own, is not to be missed. Especially, because it will give her a chance to observe Julian Spencer, Marquess Dryden. Her interest in the society pages has deepened her fascination with Lord Ice.

Phoebe first meets Lord Dryden in the village where she teaches. She meets him a second time at the school which he is inspecting since his niece is a prospective pupil. While Phoebe's looks aren't impressive, he is fascinated by her witty and intelligent conversation.

Even though he is at the Redmond's home to woo Lisabeth Redmond, Julian is much more interested in Phoebe. When Phoebe is taken to London to chaperon Lisabeth and two of her friends, she finds herself the butt of a cruel joke. Julian's response will ruin any chances at a marriage to Lisabeth.

The sixth in the Pennyroyal Green series, Ms. Long has written an engaging heroine who manages to thaw the ice around Julian's heart. The story line is a little complicated since the forward happens six weeks before the first chapter but it's well worth it. It was so entertaining to watch Julian vacillate between choosing what he felt he wanted and what his heart was telling him he needed. The conversations between Julian and Phoebe were great fun. HOW THE MARQUESS WAS WON is a highly satisfying story!

SUMMARY

They call him Lord Ice. Julian Spenser, the powerful Marquess Dryden, dictates London fashion simply by virtue of being: He tolerates only the finest, the most beautiful; he’s said to be cold and precise in all things, including the acquiring and dismissal of mistresses. And now he’s found the ideal heiress bride to help him restore the ancestral lands his feckless father lost years ago. But one unforgettable chance encounter with Lisbeth’s Redmond’s paid companion, Phoebe Vale, unthinkably unravels Jules’s control. Hardly a heart-stopping beauty, orphan and schoolteacher Phoebe Vale’s disciplined surface hides a wild heart and wicked humor. Their connection is irresistible; one stolen kiss and Jules knows he must possess her. But when Phoebe spurns his offer to become his mistress--they part forever, pride singed, hearts bruised. But when the brief light of Jules’s attention inadvertently leads to Phoebe becoming all the rage in the ton and the object of every young blood’s desire, he’s wild with jealousy, and they both battle with pride and passion. For the cost of winning their heart’s desire is only everything else they’d ever wanted.
