Maya Jackson's choice to become a fire investigator is strongly based on her family and at the urging of her father. His first love was being a Hotshot firefighter until he passed away from lung cancer, taken by the fire he couldn't live without. Maya's brother, of course, followed in their dad's footsteps as a Hotshot for the Tahoe National Forest, until a freak fire at a hotel took his life. The first time Maya was in Tahoe it was to empty her brother's home, but this time she's here to investigate who's starting the wildfires that are taking people's lives.

Logan Cain is extremely good at his job as a Hotshot Firefighter and as a leader. He takes his responsibilities seriously and is willing to risk his own life to help those who are in his charge. The wildfire currently raging crazily through his territory is frustrating him to no end, not only because it's completely out of control, but it's difficult to anticipate. He's relieved to learn that a fire investigator has been sent to help figure out what's going on, until she informs him he's the prime suspect with means and motive to start this fire. But Maya quickly decides she needs his help in more ways than one.
