Big-city reporter Pepper Malone, a Starbuck's and sushi
kind of gal, is heading to Bailee, Texas, after being run
out of Chicago for indiscretions that ended her career. Her
Great Aunt Wilma is recovering in a nursing home, so Pepper
plans to spend some time at her aunt's place licking her
wounds before trying to find a job. In visiting with the
warm and friendly Lorie, owner of the Lone Star Bakery,
Pepper takes her suggestion and talks her way into a job at
the antiquated Bailee Bugle owned by Michael
McCullough.
Since the tragic death 10 years ago of his brother Dave and
sister-in-law Anna, Michael has been raising his niece
Morgan, who's now 13. Michael has given up his dream of
teaching to take over the family-operated paper and become
a father. But threats are being directed towards Michael
and the Bugle by a mysterious man.
Pepper's life quickly becomes entangled with the residents
of Bailee, especially with her fascinating boss. Together,
and along with the residents, Michael and Pepper fight a
battle against the unknown to protect their town. Pepper
has fallen in love with Michael, but denies forming any
commitment to anyone, believing herself a loner, incapable
of forming bonds. The shocking truth is unveiled when
Morgan is kidnapped and only Michael can hope to save her.
I thoroughly enjoyed Jodi Thomas' story about the
residents of the sleepy little town of Bailee. The
storyline is terrific and the characters are outstanding.
The plot thickens as the truth about Michael's hero brother
and his family is slowly unwound. I found this to be a
cleverly written story that kept me interested from page
one through to the end. The dialogue is also clever and
quite amusing. Pepper is exceptionally unique and you will
fall in love with her, as well as the wonderful Michael.
Don't miss this terrific blend of small-town togetherness
filled with intrigue and romance.
