On the dark streets of New York City, four women have been brutally murdered. The police know they're tracking a serial killer, since all four women died the same grisly way -- a gunshot through the right eye. Disgraced NYPD Detective Dave Dillon is in a race against time to find the cold, calculating culprit, dubbed the Ladykiller, before there's another victim. This is Dave's last chance to redeem himself -- his job is on the line.
The investigation turns up a possible link involving the West Side Crisis Center hotline, where Dave meets several probable suspects, as well as Megan, to whom he's strongly attracted. When one of the hotline employees turns up murdered by the same type of gunshot wound, Dave is perplexed -- this time the victim is a man! Now Dave is sure he's right about a connection to the crisis hotline, if he can just get his superiors to agree. The case grows even more complicated, and personal, as Dave's new romance with Megan turns serious.
From early on, readers are privy to the killer's dark thoughts, devious actions and identity. We're also taken through the complex, tension-filled police investigation, as we anticipate the outcome. Just when we're sure we know the ending, a plot twist is thrown in that's both shocking and unexpected. I love a book that immerses me deeply in the storyline and then surprises me at the end -- and this one did both! Husband and wife Lawrence Light and Meredith Anthony make an excellent writing team. This compelling crime novel is a first-rate reading experience.
