YOU MAKE ME is Book one in Erin McCarthy's Blurred
Lines
series. YOU MAKE ME is a contemporary re-imagining of the
classic story Wuthering Heights. I am a longtime Erin
McCarthy fan but I never really enjoyed Wuthering Heights.
I did, however, enjoy this story. There are a lot of the
same themes from the classic tale in this modern
interpretation -- first love/true love, separation and
feelings of abandonment, and jealousy. Heath Deprey is the
tall, dark, sexy hero come back to reclaim his lost love,
Caitlyn Michaud.
There are many similarities between YOU MAKE ME and the
classic that was the inspiration, but Erin McCarthy manages
to create a different story that stands on its own. Erin
McCarthy very successfully creates a wonderful feeling of
intimacy, which is crucial to YOU MAKE ME. Cat and Heath
have an intense connection but it feels incredibly intimate
in a very good way rather than seeming too claustrophobic.
Although this modern version doesn't have the same societal
pressures that were such a factor in Wuthering Heights,
Erin McCarthy makes a very believable story for why the two
lovers were separated when Cat was sixteen and Heath was
eighteen. Cat
and Heath are two imperfect people struggling to make their
perfect love work in everyday life. Heath is a complex and
sexy hero. The excitement and longing when the two are
reunited for the first time after being apart for four
years is very powerful. I think one of the reasons this
story works so well is the relatively young age of the main
characters.
The confusion that comes with figuring out who
you are, paired with reuniting with a first, true love
makes for a very compelling story. As usual with an Erin
McCarthy novel, the dialogue seems very organic and not
stilted.
YOU MAKE ME is an emotional rollercoaster and an erotic
story about rediscovering your first love. I look forward
to reading more books in this series and other books by
Erin McCarthy.
