Poor Megan's life is just going downhill lately. She's been
laid off from her job and had to move in with a friend while
she gets her life together and looks for another job. On top
of that, she has just dumped her boyfriend after realizing
that he's never going to amount to much. However, in the
midst of all this doom and gloom there appears a light at
the end of the tunnel.
Megan spots an ad for a housesitter on a public announcement
board. She replies to it and meets with John Davis the owner
of the house that she will be looking after. John tells her
that he works for a company that has him traveling a lot and
his latest trip is to Minnesota. This means he needs someone
to look after his house as well as his cat, Endora. The
meeting goes well and John hires Megan.
When she sees the house, Megan can't believe her great luck.
The house is huge and gorgeous, but best of all, it has an
amazing pool. Even Endora is a beautiful cat that Megan
falls in love with instantly. Megan moves in and unpacks
her things. She tries hard to feel at home but there's just
something that keeps nagging at her.
It doesn't help when John starts calling her every day from
Minnesota to check on things. On top of that he sends her
bouquets of her favorite flowers and has his cleaning
service drop off a bottle of her favorite, and very
expensive, champagne. In addition, there's a creepy guy that
lives just down from the house who seems to have fixated on
her. Throw in the return of her ex-boyfriend and you've got
quite a mess.
All of that doesn't hold a candle to the break-ins at the
house. Megan is starting to realize that something is very
wrong and that she probably needs to leave the house as soon
as possible. But she can't just leave Endora. Who would feed
her and take care of her? As she's trying to figure out the
answer to her dilemma, the world turns upside down and
changes everything.
There are many secrets involved in THE HOUSESITTER, but
Megan also has some secrets of her own.
Cynthia Baxter has crafted an entertaining and rather creepy
plot in THE HOUSESITTER. It's hard to say a lot more than
that without giving away too much. Suffice it to say that
once you pick up this book, you won't be putting it down
until you read the last page.
No job, no boyfriend, no plans for the future . . . No wonder Megan Quinn is thrilled when she lands a fabulous housesitting gig in an affluent Los Angeles suburb. John Davis, the homeowner who posted the ad, explains he's desperate for someone to take care of his house and his cat while he's away on an extended business trip. Megan immediately settles into her new home, which has everything she could want: plenty of space, a luxurious swimming pool, and the solitude she craves. And she immediately falls in love with Endora, John's engaging feline. So when weird things suddenly start happening, she doesn't want to believe anything could be amiss. Even her creepy neighbor, who clearly has a crush on her, doesn't dampen her enthusiasm. Before long, though, Megan senses that while she's watching the house, she's being watched as well. She tells herself there's a reasonable explanation for all the strange coincidences ... until a string of ominous, heart-stopping events finally convince Megan there's serious trouble in her Paradise. But will her realization come too late?
