Sophia Russo is a J-Psy who knows her current case will be her last. Sophia is scheduled for retirement or rehabilitation, a process that will leave her little more than a vegetable. The J-Psy are able to retrieve memories from criminals, assisting the police to easily obtain crucial memories needed for convictions in the worst cases. Her current assignment pairs her up with human detective Max Shannon.
When several members of her staff suddenly die, Psy Councilor Nikita Duncan suspects foul play and requests Max be assigned the case. Max bristles at the notion of a partner, but changes his mind when he finds out who his future partner is. He's fascinated by Sophia Russo. Even though he is human, Max has shields that protect him from the Psy meddling in his brain. He and Sophia run with the case. Sophia veers dangerously close to the edge of the cliff at times and it's all Max can do to pull her back. These two dream of an impossible future together, even as their fragile world threatens to break apart and destroy them both, body and soul.
It's good to see Max with his own story. I love the way this world expands from book to book. The continuity is always rock solid and even though every book is complete, there is an arc for readers who never miss an entry in the Psy/Changeling universe. I know I haven't missed a book yet. Singh remains one of my favorite writers, I can always depend on her to deliver an entertaining story.

The last case he expects to be assigned is that of a
murderer targeting a Psy Councilorβs closest advisors. And
the last woman he expects to compel him in the most sensual
of ways is a Psy on the verge of a catastrophic mental
fractureβ¦
Sophia Russo is a Justice-Psy, cursed with the ability to
retrieve memories from men and women so twisted even
veteran cops keep their distance. Appointed as Maxβs
liaison with the Psy, she finds herself fascinated by this
human, her frozen heart threatening to thaw with forbidden
emotion. But, her mind filled with other peopleβs
nightmares, other peopleβs evil, sheβs standing on the
border between sanity and a silken darkness that urges her
to take justice into her own hands, to become judge, juryβ¦
and executioner...
