Romance Suspense

No one knows the patterns and nuances of communication like forensic linguist Macy Reid. She is also an expert on kidnapping, having experienced firsthand the stark terror of being abducted when she was a child. So she is the perfect investigator to be called in when a Denver tycoon's eleven-year-old daughter is abducted—for the second time.

The biggest stumbling block for Macy may be a member of her own team: Kellan Burke, the wisecracking, rule-breaking investigator who relishes getting under Macy's skin. Their styles couldn't be more different; the attraction between them more explosive. And when it becomes apparent that Macy can't solve the case without confronting the demons from her past, Kell is just the man to take her there—and back.

Re: Deadly Intent

Sounds like an intersting book. Thanks for giving me a chance to win it.

Too many to mention - It's when I am trying to go to sleep and I start thinking about charactors in the books I have read, going over a particularly good part in the book. If the charactor stays with you then they are real to you.

I feel the same way as Barbara. A good character will make me think about them when I am done with the book. Wondering what they would do if...I find I feel that way about Rachel Morgan (Kim Harrison) and Kate Daniels (IIona Andrews). Because I think I could be one of these characters. That is if I was young, stunning and had some superpowers .

Before I became a writer, I tended to 'rewrite' stories in my mind to make the characters do what I thought they should, or to improve the ending, LOL. The characters that stay with me are the ones I don't want to let go of!

I really enjoy a story with unforgettable characters.

I've read so many books, I couldn't begin to list them.

Some favs though is Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.

Of course, Legolas and Aragorn from Lord of the Rings.

A character that stayed with me was Edgar Sawtelle and I thought the book was great. Your book sounds really interesting too.
(
Sandra Hughes 10:33am November 10, 2010)

I'd have to go with Sherlock Holmes. He was great back then and he's great in all the recent imaginings of him as well.
(
Jessica Badeaux 10:45am November 10, 2010)

I read a lot of books. I really enjoy the series where they you the same character. So too many to name.
(
Pat Wilson 10:47am November 10, 2010)

I enjoy series with a recurring character. He/she must be unique and memorable enough to keep me coming back for more!
(
Kylie Brant 12:31pm November 10, 2010)

I recently finished "To Kill a Mockingbird" and, as you, will never forget Scout, she is a very memorable character in the book and Harper did a fantastic job of having Scout tell her story of her years growing up in such a controversial time period.

Thanks so much for this great contest.
(
Karen Appleby 1:31pm November 10, 2010)

This book sounds interesting, one I would enjoy reading.
(
Anna Speed 1:32pm November 10, 2010)

Characters, love when they leave an impression, that they stand out. I have so many that I love to reread about...
(
Colleen Conklin 1:43pm November 10, 2010)

The book sounds terrific....sounds as if it will draw me in quickly, and let me sink into a really good read! Thanks for the little teaser to get me hooked.
(
Jan Rogoway 1:59pm November 10, 2010)

I like Kinsey Millhone. I have read the whole alphabet series and can't wait for the next one.
(
Kirsten Kimball 2:11pm November 10, 2010)

Congrats on the new release, Kylie. A flawed character is definitely more interesting than a perfect one. It's easier to root for someone who is more like us.
(
Jane Cheung 2:13pm November 10, 2010)

I enjoy reading about on going character in books like the arcane novels and then of course the most amazing character was Alice for some reason as teen that book hit me Call me Alice. Johnathan Living Seagull is another that got my heart.
(
Cj Swier 2:29pm November 10, 2010)

This book sounds like it has it all. A fascinating job as a forensic linguist. A woman with a personal background of being kidnapped as a child and now using that experience to help others. AND ROMANCE.
(
Kathleen Bianchi 3:09pm November 10, 2010)

I love a good mystery and this one sounds excellent! Can't wait to read it!
(
Sandy Fielder 3:17pm November 10, 2010)

Oh Man!!! this looks good...
Thank you for a chance to win!!!
As far as my unforgettable characters... I would have to say all of JR Wards charaters...they are so wonderful.. I want to live in their world.
Thank you for a chance to win your book....

Kelly Mueller 3:26pm November 10, 2010)

Lots of good examples of unforgettable characters! I'm a sucker for a recurring character, too.
(
Kylie Brant 3:42pm November 10, 2010)

Believe it or not Harry Potter is unforgetable.. I love his stories.. thanks for the chance to win
(
Danielle Pontow 3:47pm November 10, 2010)

I love a good mystery/suspense story. I agree with many of the other postings, there are so many it's hard to choose. Harry Potter is a good choice as is Sherlock Holmes. Another is Phedre from Jacquline Carrey's Kushiel's series. She is an amazing heroine. One that is silly but I just love is Talon from Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series. I don't know why, but I just love him!
(
Jennifer Beyer 4:47pm November 10, 2010)

i think Scarlett O'Hara is an unforgetable character. This sounds like a great book. I'm going to add it to my must read list.
(
Cheryl Lynne 6:44pm November 10, 2010)

Buck from Call of the Wild. He may not be human but Jack London told the story from a dog's point of view.

Another memorable character is Polgara from the Belgariad series by David Eddings. His character was a strong woman with a no-nonsense attitude.

I have read so many books and so many characters that I remember, I could take forever to list them.
(
Kai Wong 7:09pm November 10, 2010)

I LOVE flawed characters. Keep it up!
(
Lisa Garrett 7:28pm November 10, 2010)

While I grew up on Sherlock Holmes stories; I have to say I l-u-u-u-u-v-v-v Lori King's interpretation of his character. I think our tastes change as we age. That said, doesn't anyone else remember all the 'uglies' life threw at D'Artagnan? Every time he got the girl, she died on him! Some of the best written characters are the oldest,
Thank you for another great book.
(
Susan Driskill 7:37pm November 10, 2010)

When I was young, we couldn't afford books so I went to the library; after reading lots of books I got desperate and read Tarzan and to this day I remember reading every title they had in stock and enjoying them.

Too meny to pick just one or a few. Your book sounds great.
(
Vickie Hightower 7:53pm November 10, 2010)

You don't have to have a serious book to have a memorable character---I just love Jim Quilleran from "The Cat Who..." series by Lillian Jackson Braun.
(
Sue Farrell 8:01pm November 10, 2010)

Your book sounds great and I would love to read it!
(
Edwina Cowgill 8:31pm November 10, 2010)

All of the characters in Stephen Kings - Firestarter stand out. Kinsey Millhone is a favorite of mine also. And add Stephanie Plum - hysterical and so is her Grandma. I love books.
(
Vikki Parman 8:37pm November 10, 2010)

This one is EASY!!! Roland from The Dark Tower Series. Eddie too. These men became friends to me.
(
Michele Powell 8:54pm November 10, 2010)

Sounds like a really touching & exciting book! Characters with several sides are always more interesting. Humor, even in tense situations is always enjoyable.
(
Diane Sallans 9:27pm November 10, 2010)

NIck and Griffin in the Beverly Barton books. Your book sounds great I can't wait to read it.
(
Annetta Stolpmann 9:43pm November 10, 2010)

It helps that I was names after her (middle name), but Anne of Green Gables. Doesn't fit in, mouth gets her in trouble (oh, do I know that one!!!), goes through a clumsy stage (I never outgrew mine, just cover it well), hates her red hair...
She is a character in ALL the meaning of that word. Yet we can all relate to some aspect of her and are on her side through out the book(s)!
I still have all my Anne books, and always buy copies for all my nieces when they get old enough.
(
Victoria Colyer-Kerr 9:46pm November 10, 2010)

No doubt for me - Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice. I see myself in her and I quote from that book all the time.
(
Molly Wilsbacher 11:37pm November 10, 2010)

I agree that Elizabeth from "Pride and Prejudice" is unforgettable and so is Mr. Darcy.
(
Ginger Hinson 11:51pm November 10, 2010)

Their are a number of characters in Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove that I re-visit from time to time.

With your question catching me off guard so early in the morning, and so many books that I have read in the past, the only one that comes to mind is Helen Keller. She had to deal with so much adversity growing up. My heart went out to her, with each page turned, and I actually patterned my life after her, to a degree. She had such a profound affect on my life. I read her autobiography at the right time of my life for her to affect me. She truly was a special lady who did so much for others, and was a trailblazer in her own right!! I thank you for putting so much thought into your books. I can't wait to read your latest one!!
(
Peggy Roberson 7:50am November 11, 2010)

So many great characters mentioned!
Some make me nod my head in
agreement. For others I jot down books
to try! So thanks for the
recommendations!
(
Kylie Brant 8:32am November 11, 2010)

One of my memorable characters are Claire from Diana Gabaldon's series. She made her a strong, independent woman who can hold her own, but at times she is vulnerable. Thanks for the great contest!
(
Nicole Caroen 9:01am November 11, 2010)

Believe it or not my favorite and most memorable character was Don Quixote from the book of the same title by Miguel de Cervante.

The reason he was so memorable was because he WAN'T perfect. Maybe that's why my husband and I picked the theme song from the musical Man of La Mancha for our wedding song when we got married in 1970.

During our marriage it has helped us to remember that we don't have to be perfect just to try our best.
(
Jeanne Miro 9:18am November 11, 2010)

There are so many unforgettable characters. Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy would be my favorites. And then there is Anne of Green Gables. Those are the books I go back and read year after year.
(
Pam Howell 10:39am November 11, 2010)

Ayla and Jondalar in Jean Auel's Earth's Children series stay with me always. I never tire of rereading their story.

One of my favorite characters comes from the 7 Williamsburg Novels by Elswyth Thane, the main female character Tibby Day. I read the books in the 1950s, with a refresher about 20 years later, but I've never forgotten her. Another is the title character of Gwen Bristow's of her CELIA GARTH, with about the same history for me.

And then, yes, there's Scout, though lately the portrayal of her has been colored by the movie version which I've seen 4 or 5 time in the last few years.

I guess other characters have been somewhat drowned in the deluge of books I've read since then.
