I would agree - Sherrilyn Kenyon's Carpathians are really bad, but for me there was one book that I read the first chapter and put the book down because I just couldn't go there - John Grisham's A Time To Kill. I couldn't handle what those two young men did to that young girl. I can read about the vampires riping out throats - but what they did to the girl. It is to real. Happy Saturday everyone! Christy I've read some creepy villains plenty of times, but Alden takes the cake in evilness. He was definitely one of those characters that stay with you. He gave me chills and scared me to death. I think it was because he was so real and you can turn the TV on and hear about creeps like him. Karin Slaughter has some seriously creepy villains along with some of Iris Johansen. So many others just can't think this early in the morning. Have a great weekend!! There are really too many villains to chose from but I guess I would have to say from recent fiction I've been reading that Anton Chigur from No Country For Old Men is by far one of the more compelling and interesting antagonists. I don't think I have...at least not so creepy that the villain was beyond redemption. However the last book I read with a scary villain was an unknown from Don't Breathe a Word by Jennifer McMahon. It was an eerie read with so many twisits and turns and in which the villain had no name or face. An unknown is scary to me. (Na S 12:24pm September 3, 2011)

Hey Christy! I'd have to agree with Karen Rose's villains being way up there are the creep-o-meter. However, just seeing Aldin Pike's name in print again gave me chills. SCARY! He's so much creepier because there are really people like that! To anyone trying to decide whether or not to buy SWEET JUSTICE Tuesday, I say go for it! I read so much, it's really hard to remember plot lines of specific books. I had read one book where a serial killer set up several people to take the fall for his actions. What's creepy is wondering - what would one do if one were set up by a stranger and how in the world could you prove your innocence.

I have never read any of the Last Chance Rescue books. I love Karen Rose so I think I will love these too! The most creepy fictional villian ever has to be Rutger Hauer in The Hitcher movie. Steven King has had a few that that gave me some sleepless nights (Cujo being the worst), but Mary Higgins Clark's were the ones that made me afraid to go to sleep. Some of her villains were so scary because for much of the book I didn't recognize them as the bad guy and once I did, well lets just say, they scared the crap out of me. Hi Molly! I'm not big on gruesome details either. When I'm reading, I have a tendency to skim over those kinds of things. In writing, I try not to go too far. In SWEET JUSTICE, though the villain is evil, I don't graphically detail his acts--well, except for once, but he was almost as evil as the villain so I didn't feel too badly about it. One that comes to my mind right now is the villain that appears in Linda Howard's DREAM MAN. I don't know if it was because I was reading it late at night or if it was the fact I was home alone, but there is one scene that scared the daylights out of me. J.D. I'm glad you're not too keen on all the gory stuff. My favorite type of book has always been historical novels--the ones which feature either real historical characters--or if necessary, someone that fits into the era and is based on a real character. Romantic suspense is a close second. Unfortunately, I've read so many books over the years that I can't remember any particular vile characters. However, I know that Lisa Gardner, Iris Johansen, Suzanne Brockmann, and Tess Gerritsen are some who have written absolutely chilling books with very evil characters. I've meant to stop reading some of them because of my...hmm..."delicate psyche" but I just can't pass them up when a new one comes out; I usually pass on the guys because they can be even more graphic and...scary. And I read a few whose books are scary but still leave me with a feel-good aftertaste. Other than gory ones I find the psychological thrillers the hardest to read. I'd love to read some of yours. I don't remember all of the details it was years ago but the nasty character who tortures Jamie in Outlander had me really upset. I and the lessers in JR Wards BDB can be cruel. Its hard to pick worthy villain as all creep me out, I remember reading The Morning after by Lisa Jackson,the villain buried his victims alive. Of course I have come across many books since with the same theme. Then their is the one where the villain uses their greatest fear against them like heights, water, snakes etc... were their begging to die to escape nightmare.
