Born in Yorkshire, in the north of England, Holden read English Literature at Cambridge University. While there, in addition to obtaining a degree, she met her husband, worked on university newspapers, and learned how to ride a bicycle in a ball gown.

Wendy Holden divides her time between a small flat in central London and a 17th century cottage in Derbyshire, where she lives with her husband, Jonathan McLeod, a political consultant, and their son, Andrew.
