Re: Only Mine (6:02pm August 9, 2011):

Oh, Alyson, you are so right. My assistant keeps a massive list of character names, hair colors, relationships, etc. As I write the Fool's Gold books, I keep a thick binder right beside me the whole time, and I refer to it often. I often refer to the city map on the Fool's Gold website so I can keep the locations straight. www.foolsgoldca.com

Re: Only Mine (5:59pm August 9, 2011):

Jeanette, It is so hot around the country! I'll take a little of that here in Seattle. Well... I'll take the sunshine, but you can keep the heat.

Re: Only Mine (5:58pm August 9, 2011):

Aw, thank you, Marilyn! You are always so good to me. I appreciate it!

Re: Only Mine (5:58pm August 9, 2011):

Thank you so much, Maria! I'm thrilled that you're enjoying your visits to Fool's Gold.

Re: Only Mine (5:56pm August 9, 2011):

Angela, Thank you! And as cruel as it might make me sound, I hope the curiosity about ONLY YOURS and ONLY HIS has you in knots. ;)

Yes, three handsome cowboy brothers will move to Fool's Gold next year. I'm writing the book for the middle brother now, having so much fun!

Re: Only Mine (5:54pm August 9, 2011):

Thank you so much, Peggy, for giving my books a try! You can read free excerpts of the Fool's Gold books at www.foolsgoldca.com/bookstore.html.

And yes, I loooooove the covers of ONLY MINE, ONLY YOURS, and ONLY HIS! Aren't they pretty? Big thumbs up to Harlequin's art department!

Re: Only Mine (5:51pm August 9, 2011):

Thank you, Jane! I like that, too. I hate making readers wait too long. :)

Re: Already Home (3:57pm May 11, 2011):

Hi, Jan! Thanks so much for stopping by. I do have a Better Homes & Garden Cookbook that I turn to sometimes. They're good for when you want to make your favorite stand-bys. I don't make desserts very often. I discovered while writing the Bakery Sisters books that I really don't have a talent for desserts. I'd rather leave that to the pros.

Re: Already Home (2:23pm May 11, 2011):

Annetta, I think I love the prep work more than the actual cooking... although I'm a little leery of knives.

Re: Already Home (11:28am May 11, 2011):

Kathleen, wouldn't that be the ultimate in luxury, having a personal chef? I would love that!

Re: Already Home (11:05am May 11, 2011):

Pat, congratulations on retiring! Isn't Debbie Macomber's cookbook terrific? I need to add her Christmas one to my shopping list. What I love about the recipes is that they're pretty much fail-proof, which I need!

Re: Chasing Perfect (8:34am April 30, 2010):

Lynn, Wow, eight moves all in the same town. That's impressive! And that means that you probably know the town better than most. You know all the secret spots!

Re: Chasing Perfect (8:32am April 30, 2010):

Anthony, mistake or not, you're very welcome! And yes, I have heard from single, straight men who have read and enjoyed my books. Many are surprised that romance novels have a lot more depth than they ever assumed. Give it a try, and then email me via my website, www.susanmallery.com, to let me know what you thought!

Re: Chasing Perfect (12:11pm April 29, 2010):

Michele, Sounds like you've moved almost as many times as I have! Most of my moves were in adulthood, though, as we traveled for my husband's work.

Oops! I have to sign off. I'm in Indianapolis today on tour, and I'm about to go on air! Wish me luck!

Re: Chasing Perfect (12:10pm April 29, 2010):

Rosemary, That sounds so homey to me, that you've lived your whole life in one town. Sigh!

Mary Anne, Thank you! I think that size, 43,000, is a city, too... but it's a small enough city that it can and does still feel like a town. You get some of the benefits of size - services, a university campus - but you still get that warm, friendly, welcoming feeling of a small town, where people know each other.

Re: Chasing Perfect (12:06pm April 29, 2010):

Lisa, North Carolina is beautiful country! And it sounds like you have a lot of options within easy driving distance - the mountains, the coast. That's one of the things I love best about California, as well, and one of the reasons I chose to set the Fool's Gold series there.

Re: Chasing Perfect (5:12pm April 28, 2010):

Gladys, And when a small town is close to a big city, you often have a lot of residents who commute to work in the city every day, so they're less likely to know as many people in town. There's something really special about walking down the street and knowing people by name. Every outing is a homecoming.

Mary, I like you already! I'm an optimist, too. There are great experiences to be had everywhere.

Re: Chasing Perfect (4:06pm April 28, 2010):

Thanks, Jane! I'm already hearing from readers who bought Chasing Perfect yesterday, finished it already, and loved it. That's so fun! I love hearing from readers.

Re: Chasing Perfect (3:44pm April 28, 2010):

Shirley, What incredible growth, to go from 2,000 people to over 100,000!!! I bet you can't even recognize the place from the pictures. It is fun to live someplace that's growing, though, isn't it, to get those new businesses and restaurants coming to town? Less fun when they don't turn out to be fabulous, but a true joyous discovery when they do!

Re: Chasing Perfect (3:42pm April 28, 2010):

Brandy, Wow, 1500 is too big for you? That's amazing. I will tell you, I've been at conferences that had 1500 to 2000 people, and that can seem like way too many people at times. LOL But I do like the services that come with living in a town with a few more people than that.

Re: Chasing Perfect (3:40pm April 28, 2010):

I think 13,000 people is small, too! But I bet that Karin doesn't feel the same way. Everything is relative!

Re: Chasing Perfect (12:35pm April 28, 2010):

Hi, Cindy! I think you're right, and that's the optimist's way of looking at things. There are always positives to every place you live.

Re: Chasing Perfect (12:35pm April 28, 2010):

Thanks for stopping by, Gail! So when you read, do you grativate toward small town settings in books, or do you like to read books set in large cities?

Re: Chasing Perfect (11:22am April 28, 2010):

The Riverwalk is fabulous, Pat. San Antonio has such a fun vibe. I'd love to go back, too.

Re: Chasing Perfect (11:21am April 28, 2010):

That's so fun, Marilyn, coffee mugs with the residents' names on them! Don't you love it? And a hangout where you can play board games. Love it!

Re: Chasing Perfect (9:23am April 28, 2010):

Good morning! FYI, you can read the first two chapters of CHASING PERFECT for free by joining the Members Only area at www.susanmallery.com.

Re: Lip Service (9:12am June 5, 2009):

Barbs, Better late than never, as they say. Thank you so much for your sweet words. I'm glad you're enjoying the Lone Star Sisters. (Titan, by the way.)

Things did get pretty steamy between Lexi and Cruz. You knew that would happen, right? Cruz doesn't do anything halfway. He's all passion.

Re: Lip Service (5:57am June 3, 2009):

Audra, that's an ambitious wish if I ever heard one! It's hard to turn off the caretaker switch and just relax. Think of it this way - having fun with your kids is part of your job, too. That's what gives them the memories they'll treasure.

Re: Lip Service (3:22pm June 2, 2009):

Debra, I'm so glad you used this blog as inspiration to start your own list. Congratulations on surviving cancer! I like what you said about coming up with wishes that you can make come true. You have the power, girlfriend!

Mari, a year of travel sounds fascinating. Where would you go first?

Bridget, why not write a book while you're in Italy? Imagine the inspiration you'd get in those fabulous ancient piazzas (eating pizza in the piazza while you write). When I think of Italy, I never think of rain. Just that soft Mediterranean sunlight washing over the stucco buildings and red tile roofs.

Re: Lip Service (11:36pm June 1, 2009):

Hey, more nocturnal creatures! Great to see you here. Thanks for posting.

Sharla, it's so exciting to buy your first home. I remember how weird and liberating it was to be able to choose any paint color I wanted and not to have to ask a landlord's permission. Of course, I made some color choices along the way that I grew to regret, but that's what's great about paint. You can just paint over it! Have fun with your house search.

Alyson, I have to say, with my curly hair, an Indian sweat room would not be my friend. If you could sweat without all that humidity, it might be okay.

Patricia, your dream sounds like a book I read a couple years ago. Have you read Eat, Love, Pray by Elizabeth Gilbert? It's a very interesting nonfiction book. Your house project sounds like a major undertaking. I admire you!

Re: Lip Service (9:38pm June 1, 2009):

Rosemary, that's an interesting wish. Very deep and thought-provoking. Do you try to do new things and meet new people even when you are afraid, or do you let fear control you?

I'm not naturally all that extroverted, myself. Book tours are fun, but also kind of terrifying.

Re: Lip Service (4:38pm June 1, 2009):

Hi, everyone! It's great to be here. I'm sorry I wasn't here earlier this morning. I had a little technological difficulty... I went to the wrong page on the fabulous Fresh Fiction site!

Penney, thanks for sharing one of your wishes. What a great idea, to join a hiking club. California has gorgeous mountain scenery. I've been doing some research on the Sierra Nevada, and I want to dive into some of those photographs! (Not to mention some of the vats of incredible wine they produce in that region.) Of course, the sea coast scenery isn't too shabby, either.

Dawn, Europe sounds like heaven, doesn't it? What country is at the top of your list of those you want to visit?

Sara, it is an interesting exercise, isn't it? It'd make a fabulous icebreaker game at a party.

Karin, you're my hero! I think you and President Bush (Senior) should go hang gliding together. Didn't he jump out of an airplane long after he left the presidency? The secret service probably wouldn't have allowed him to do it while he was president. Hmm... I feel a story idea coming on.

LuAnn, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandson's medical issues. That must be heartbreaking. No wonder all your wishes are for him.

Kelli Jo, what is a Spirit Bear? That's so intriguing! Is it a spirit? I mean, is that something metaphysical you're hoping to see? Or is it an actual breed of bear?
