EMBER, by Naima Simone, is a very fast-paced tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat in suspense the entire time you are reading the book. The way the elements from the Cinderella fairytale are used throughout the story is genius in the most deliciously diabolical way - specifically the references to the ‘Glass Slipper’ and ‘Fairy Dust’. I absolutely loved the liberal use of some of the names (the mice) from the Disney version of Cinderella, as well as the wordplay on the names of the main female (Ember) and main male (Asad Prince) characters. This story has all the BEST elements of a fairytale reimagining with many dark twists and turns. Wicked stepmother -check, wicked siblings - check, dead Dad - check, concerned godparent - check, and last but not least, the daughter who is treated unfairly or ignored altogether, while baddies use her talents for their own personal gain - check! I love that the female protagonist, Ember, is far from a shrinking violet who’s nice to everyone, no matter how they treat her. Ember has many challenges, but she faces them all head-on, and she embraces her weaknesses as well as her strengths like a badass boss.
After the death of Ember’s father, the overall plot of the book takes us through what is to become of Marcus’ “family” and all the messy dynamics that entail, as well as the company, House of Cross, he left behind. Surprises and subplots are well-woven into the fabric of this story. Unlike the sweet fairytale, the characters in this story range from good villains to heroic villains to worse villains. Is there such a thing as a good villain? Read EMBER to find out. Grimm would be proud of this author’s tale. The chemistry is off the charts and so on point with the enemies-to-lovers (?) aspect of the story.
The rapport (or lack thereof) couldn’t be better between all the supporting characters, as well as with the male and female protagonists.
If you are a reader who wants heart- pounding scenes, all kinds of spice, and characters you hate and love simultaneously, dive in headfirst into EMBER, no life jacket needed. I especially enjoyed the moments of levity blended throughout the book. This dark mafia romance includes plenty of intrigue with just the right amount of red herrings and breadcrumbs to lead all takers to a fantastic and satisfying conclusion.

I loved EMBER and will likely re-read it even though I know how it ends.
