YOU DID NOTHING WRONG by C.G. Drews is a domestic horror novel that sinks its teeth into you right from the beginning. A newly married couple, a promising life, a crumbling haunted house, and a darkness that won’t stay hidden. Will this family survive, or are the monsters they fear themselves?
Elodie January is starting a new life after leaving Australia and moving to America with her handsome, devoted husband, Bren, and her son. They settle into Bren’s ancestral home, where he is renovating it room by room. Elodie’s son, Jude, is small for his age and acts much younger, often throwing tantrums and acting out. Elodie is fiercely devoted to her son, obsessive at times, and defiant of Bren’s attempts to intervene. When she tells Jude a new baby is on the way, things only get worse. When Jude starts talking about the house, hearing voices in the walls, and being afraid the house will eat him, Elodie realizes something strange is going on. Bren is a fixer, but he can’t seem to fix what is happening with his new family. As Elodie starts descending into darkness, Jude worsens, and Bren becomes his savior, causing a cataclysmic reaction from Elodie that will leave this young family in ruins.
YOU DID NOTHING WRONG is a dark, immersive horror novel with compelling characters who are young, idealistic, and damaged. Both Elodie and Bren have difficult backstories filled with loss, neglect, and emotional abuse. They are hoping for a new, perfect life, but when a darkness lives deep inside, and obsession turns dangerous, their attempts at normalcy implode. The author does a masterful job of making us care about these characters, even when we sense the darkness. The writing is propulsive and tells the story in subsequent chapters with flashbacks interspersed. The dread and suspense continue to grow as the couple head into the explosive ending, leaving readers shocked at the violence, reeling at the loss, and hoping one family member will get a happy ending. YOU DID NOTHING WRONG will keep readers on the edge of their seats and eager for more stories by this talented author.
