Nightclub Heiress Adrianna Kensington comes from wealth and privilege and has a father who knows how to strong-arm the right people. But when her upcoming society wedding starts to take a dark turn, Adrianna believes her stalker/kidnapper has returned, and no wedding party member is safe in Cate Quinn’s THE BRIDESMAID. At the wedding rehearsal, a bridesmaid, Simone Walters, is found bloody and hanging in one of Adrianna’s wedding dresses. Is Adrianna’s stalker back? As blue-haired, goth-clad freelance forensic investigator, Holly Stone, enters the scene, she realizes the victim is her former boss and mentor. This makes it personal. The soon-to-be groom has hired Holly to find the killer, so the wedding can go on as planned. Holly replaces the dead bridesmaid and travels with Adrianna and her entourage to a Caribbean island called Elysium for the destination wedding. As Holly starts investigating, she realizes everyone in the wedding party is hiding secrets, and it all leads back to a boarding school they all attended. As Holly traverses the island on a quad bike, explores lava tunnels, hot springs, bell towers, and panic rooms, she starts to unearth some deadly secrets. When another bridesmaid dies, Holly must use her forensic skills to uncover the clues her former boss left her before the whole wedding party is wiped out for good. THE BRIDESMAID is an engaging thriller featuring a quirky forensic investigator who uses her skills to track down the truth. The novel has short chapters with multiple POVs, which keeps the pace moving along, although the story does run a tad too long. The wealthy socialite and her media-obsessed bridesmaids offer a glimpse into a superficial world where everyone is a brand and every event is a marketing strategy. The lead character, Holly Stone, is a likable character and her budding romance with a former schoolmate turned cop is fun to watch. Many of the other characters are insufferable, and the plot loses focus along the way, making the ending a little incongruent. However, THE BRIDESMAID does offer an entertaining glimpse into wealthy people behaving badly, and an eccentric but wickedly smart forensic investigator trying to make sense of it all.
