Odessa is the forgotten princess in the kingdom, always clad in drab gray clothing, while her younger sister has been trained as the heir apparent and the Sparrow. The Calandra treaty ensures the peace of the five kingdoms, requiring that a marriage between heirs to fulfill the SHIELD OF SPARROWS and everyone knows that Odessa’s sister, Mae, is betrothed to the Prince of Turan, Zavier Wolfe. When the Turans arrive at the request of Odessa’s father, they unexpectedly come with the Prince and the Guardian… and all the prior plans change when the Prince and the Guardian demand that Odessa serve as the Sparrow and marry the Prince. Now, Odessa finds herself caught between kingdoms where magic, intrigue, betrayal, and even love are hiding around every corner. Can she sort out the truth in between all the lies?
Devney Perry knocks the world building out of the park with SHIELD OF SPARROWS! We’ve got monsters and magic galore- and oh what a wild ride she takes us on! The depth of the world-building is stunning for the first book in the series, especially as each element is incorporated naturally into the book- no info dumps here. The diversity of the various towns and kingdoms is amazing, but I have to admit that the monsters and their role in all of this fascinate me the most.
Odessa is an intriguing heroine. While she’s clothed in the dullest of grays and mainly ignored by her family as useless, she has a courageous spark that we see from the very first page. That spark only grows as she gains some independence and starts to develop her own ideas of the world around her. She asks questions, constantly, and her inquisitive nature leads her into unexpected discoveries as so much has been hidden from her… and from the people of Turan in general.
SHIELD OF SPARROWS is the first book in the series and wow, what a stunningly good start! Devney Perry has me fangirling as I loved every single moment of this book. Every. Single. Moment. In fact, I wanted to reread it all over again after finishing it, which is not my typical thing to do. The world-building, the character development, the magic, the mysterious and horrible creatures that stalk the people… every aspect is so well done that it’s almost impossible to put SHIELD OF SPARROWS down. Read SHIELD OF SPARROWS now; you won’t regret it!

I didn’t need a deity to remind me I was powerless. Being a princess had never been more than a performance—twenty-three years of empty titles and hollow traditions. My sister revels in the spectacle, basking in the attention and flawlessly playing her part. I was never asked to be part of the charade.
Until the day an infamous monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince walked into my father’s throne room and ruined my life. The day I married a stranger, signed a magical treaty in blood, and set off across the continent to the most treacherous kingdom in all the realm.
That was the day I learned that not all myths are make-believe. That lies and legends are often the same. And that the only way to kill the monsters we fear was to become one…
