Romance Suspense | Thriller Police Procedural

When Lt. Eve Dallas gets a call that sends her to an abandoned limousine with a body inside and finds his identity and one of her cards and so many frustrating unknowns. Little by little, she finds that Giovanni Rossi was part of a secret organization known as The Twelve who fought during the Urban War. Many years ago, through tragedy, the survivors had BONDED IN DEATH and would respond when called.

Giovanni responded to what he thought was one of The Twelve as they promised, but an enemy had tricked him and Gio is the first to succumb to the planned revenge. Unfortunately for this traitor, he has made a fierce enemy of Dallas and her team. You do not come to New York and commit murder and not expect to pay.

BONDED IN DEATH is unbelievable the 60th in J.D. Robb’s (aka Nora Roberts) In Death series, which had only been planned as a trilogy. Each offering in the series is still as mind-blowing as the first book – and BONDED IN DEATH is certainly one of the best. All of the characters have grown and matured but still have an amazing fun side – the bullpen’s eye-catching socks and ties to Eve herself who has a problem with some old sayings (and that is always a moment when readers stop and say “yes” that is a dumb saying isn’t it?), and of course the romance between Dallas and Rourke continues to be hot and heavy, and are still loving and protective of each other.

In BONDED IN DEATH, we learn more about the Urban War, a topic much hinted at but never explained as it is in this offering. We are also introduced to more of Summerset’s background which includes those who were part of that secret organization and the death of his wife. You might need a box of tissues close at hand.

Throughout the series Dallas, Rourke, Peabody, McNab, Somerset and all the other cops and friends have grown into family for readers and fans. BONDED IN DEATH will have everyone laughing at times, trying to catch their breath during the action (including the moments Dallas and Roarke share) and in tears at other times. Another fantastic read from an author who can certainly tell a story and make readers fall in love with the characters all over again.

SUMMARY

The #1 New York Times bestselling author spins an epic tale of loyalty, treachery, murder, and the long shadow of war…

His passport read Giovanni Rossi. But decades ago, during the Urban Wars, he was part of a small, secret organization called The Twelve. Responding to an urgent summons from an old compatriot, he landed in New York and eased into the waiting car. And died within minutes…

Lieutenant Eve Dallas finds the Rossi case frustrating. She’s got an elderly victim who’d just arrived from Rome; a widow who knows nothing about why he’d left; an as-yet unidentifiable weapon; and zero results on facial recognition. But when she finds a connection to the Urban Wars of the 2020s, she thinks Summerset—fiercely loyal, if somewhat grouchy, major-domo and the man who’d rescued her husband from the Dublin streets—may know something from his stint as a medic in Europe back then.

When Summerset learns of the crime, his shock and grief are clear—because, as he eventually reveals, he himself was one of The Twelve. It’s not a part of his past he likes to revisit. But now he must—not only to assist Eve’s investigation, but because a cryptic message from the killer has boasted that others of The Twelve have also died. Summerset is one of those who remain—and the murderous mission is yet to be fully accomplished…
