THE MIRROR by Nora Roberts brings readers back to the coast of Maine and Sonya MacTavish. With exceptionally perfect timing Sonya finds she has inherited the home and lands from an uncle she didn’t know she had – the twin of her own father. After having broken off an engagement she decides to look into it. Her best friend Cleopatra goes with her and is surprised to find that the Lost Brides Manor is haunted. Some of them are easily accepted but it is the evil entity of a witch that Sonya and her old and new friends must find a way to defeat.
THE MIRROR starts at the exact place the INHERITANCE ends with Sonya and her cousin Owen Poole being pulled into a mysterious mirror. There they see and hear sights that are long past but give light to the history of the house and the lost loves of all the Poole men – and perhaps hints on how to remove the evil curse.
This story, though surrounded by the past and some rather frightening moments also deals with the lives and loves of all the occupants involved. Sonya met her cousin Owen and lover Trey Doyle in the first book and their friendship and romance build and strengthen as they work their way through the maze of the lost seven brides. Cleo is rather methodical when it comes to her romance with Owen and readers will watch as she slowly allows her heart’s desire to move forward.
There are pets galore as Cleo adds a cat (Pye – and you have to read THE MIRROR to find out how she came about that name) to the mix of puppies – Yoda, Mookie and Jones. As always with a Nora Roberts book, the dialogue is unique with a depth that is either very emotionally charged or downright hilarious. There is also a moment that gives Sonya a bit of revenge on her former fiancé as she goes back to Boston for a presentation. That will be something to look forward to reading. (See The Inheritance to hear more about the breakup and you will agree.)
Some of the amazing characters – living and no longer living are Clover, one of the lost brides, who likes to make her thoughts known via music that fits the mood or circumstance on different cell phones; a little boy who died of a fever loves to play ball with Yoda and the other dogs; Molly the maid loves nothing better than cleaning up after everyone and laying out the clothes she thinks should be worn and usually she picks perfectly; and cousins and others who make up the town and friends. Personally, I would love these ghosts, but of course, there are more that are not always seen. The protagonist is a witch named Hester Dobbs who thought because she slept with one of those who were to inherit the manor that she should have it all. And over the years she has done her best to destroy all those in her way. Stealing their wedding rings has been part of her magic to stay in the manor now the good guys must find a way to get those back and get rid of the witch.
THE MIRROR is the second of Ms. Roberts' The Lost Brides trilogy and as amazing as the first one the second was even better so I cannot wait to see what the finale looks like.
The haunting saga of the Lost Bride trilogy continues with The Mirror, as the #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Inheritance, presents the second sensational new novel.
When Sonya MacTavish inherits the huge Victorian mansion on the coast of Maine, she has no idea that the house is haunted. The footsteps she hears at night, the doors slamming, the music playing, are not figments of her imagination. In her dreams she sees glimpses of the past. In the present she finds portraits of brides. And when she has visions of an antique mirror, she is drawn to it, sensing it holds dark family secrets.
Then one night the mirror appears and Sonya glides through this looking glass, into the past--and sees a bride murdered on her wedding day, the circle of gold torn from her finger. It is a scene that will play out again and again--a centuries-old curse that must be broken--and a puzzle she must solve if there is any hope of breaking the curse.
