Phoebe Kropf lives with her parents, brothers, and new sister-in-law Rhoda. While she’s excellent at crafting and cooking, nobody understands why Phoebe wasn’t able to learn to read. The kitchen is starting to feel quite full with three women, but the last thing anyone expects is AN AMISH CHRISTMAS MATCH for Phoebe.
Seth Beiler is in need of a housekeeper as the Christmas holidays approach. The farmhouse near Sweetbrier Creek holds six brothers at various life stages, and the eldest, Seth, makes most of the decisions. He employed a mature lady, his Aenti Edna, but she injured her arm and can’t continue the work. However, she recommends young Phoebe, who could live respectably in the dower cottage or dawdi haus with her and keep house for the six men. Seth is rushed off his feet and hasn’t time to think it over, but as a childless widower, he doesn’t meet many other women. If Phoebe from the Bergamot area can fill the role, she’ll do.
Winnie Griggs is superlative at historical romance, but so few modern touches are present that this Amish story comes close to historical. There is a phone box, down the road for community use. A hired car can take people if it’s too far for a horse and buggy ride. Almost everything in the home is made by hand, which includes Christmas gifts and cards. Recipes are written, not online, and entertainment is entirely sociable, no screens are required. I had a good time following the story of Phoebe coming to terms with her condition, which is probably dyslexia and dyspraxia, but I was quite distressed that few people in the community seem to know about this. Her skills would put anyone to shame, so she should not have to feel like a failure.
Ohio is cold but not deep in snow, enabling travel and community activities. The characters meet other Amish folks on a few occasions, making for a lively tale. More time is spent in the kitchen than anywhere else, as this warm room is the centre of the home in bleak weather. With some wholesome cooking tips and appetites to match, the romance story will appeal to those who enjoy cookery. The young men all come across as rounded personalities. AN AMISH CHRISTMAS MATCH is a light tale of interpersonal relationships and growing up, learning to be independent, and becoming the best you can be. This starts a series about Sweetbrier Creek. This author has given me lots of pleasure with her books, so Happy Christmas to you too, Winnie Griggs.
Phoebe Kropf knows everyone thinks she’s a bit odd—and more than a little accident-prone. She doesn’t understand why they fuss over her at home rather than see her as a bright, independent Amish woman. So when a friend asks Phoebe to help care for a house full of young men in nearby Sweetbrier Creek, she leaps at the chance to prove she’s more than her shortcomings . . .
Widower Seth Beiler is in over his head with his five orphaned brieder to care for and all the Christmas orders his woodworking shop needs to fulfill. When he asked for help with some cooking and cleaning, he wasn’t expecting a housekeeper as unconventional—or lovely—as Phoebe. Yet her warm care and holiday traditions win their hearts one by one. And soon the farmhouse finally starts to feel like home again. When the Christmas season and Phoebe’s time there is nearly at an end, will Seth convince her that the greatest gift would be her staying . . . as part of their familye?
