After a high-profile expedition into the Underworld failed, Joshua Knight has retreated from the world to a mansion dubbed the Funhouse by locals. His ghost hunting talent is burned out, the entire team except for him is missing, and he’s been diagnosed as paranoid and delusional by the doctors at Amber Dawn Psychiatric Hospital. The Funhouse only confuses his senses more with lights, mirrors with strange reflections, and a glowing and foggy mist that consumes all visibility every evening. Joshua tries to warn Molly Griffin when she shows up on his doorstep, but Joshua is the only link to Molly’s missing sister and she’s not taking no for an answer. Molly has her own talents, however, and she hopes she can help Josh unlock the mystery behind the missing team… and find Leona.
PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES is the 16th book in the Ghost Hunters series and is set in the Harmony world. Jayne Castle helpfully provides readers new to the series with a quick overview at the beginning so they can easily jump in and appreciate the story. There are references to the couple from SWEETWATER AND THE WITCH but the overall story in PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES stands on its own merits. However, I can’t imagine reading one Jayne Castle book and not wanting to devour all the others in the series as these books are just THAT good!
I love the Griffin family and their closeness and willingness to never give up on each other. Molly is a lot of fun and I particularly liked the touch about her volunteer work on the side. Molly, Leona, Charlotte, and Eugenie have created a family together that is both tightknit and welcoming. What a contrast to Joshua’s family, where he’s distanced himself to avoid them facing the scandal of the failed expedition.
And the Funhouse… what a misnamed house of horrors! It’s not gory or gross, but the mirrors everywhere with weird images and the mist rolling in are enough to give a person nightmares. What a testament to the strength of Molly and Joshua that they stay there overnight- and that Joshua has been there even longer!
Jayne Castle is a master at world building and I love how she keeps adding to the world of Harmony. We have alien mysteries, possible guild issues, and even a question of mental health to resolve as PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES has mysteries within mysteries! And have I mentioned the dust bunnies yet? The dust bunnies are my favorite creatures and you’ll understand why once you meet these adorable but tough hungry balls of fluff! If you haven’t read one of Jayne Castle’s books yet, what are you waiting for?
