In the latest enchanting mystery from the New York Times bestselling author, Mia Malone is working as a catering director at a ski lodge, but when her roommate’s ex checks in, everything starts going downhill . . .
To keep her cooking school and catering business, Mia’s Morsels, afloat, Mia handed off oversight to her boyfriend Trent’s mother while she focused on earning a steady paycheck. Too bad her mean-spirited boss at the lodge keeps the misery flowing as steadily as the money. At least her roommate, Christina, is still dedicated to Mia’s Morsels—though she’s also distracted, thanks to her clingy mother’s constant demands. The distraction only grows when Christina’s old flame shows up in Magic Springs, Idaho, in his Escalade, claiming out of the blue to be her fiancé.
The arrival of some homeless kittens, as well as Trent’s new familiar, a cute little Maltese, brings more chaos—as well as a strange spiritual energy that seems to emanate from the animals. But before Mia can figure out what kind of paranormal pets she has on her hands, she finds herself with a murder to solve—when a dead body is found in the lodge rental of Christina’s suddenly attentive ex. Magic is an open secret in this fun town, and I could not love this series more. This is book five in the series, so it's well-established, but each book could be read as a standalone should you want to try out a fun paranormal series by an NYT best-selling author. Catching up with Mia, Trent, Grans, Christina, Abigail, and all the spooky, magical, wonderous side characters is a delight. Like most of us, Mia has financial issues and takes a new job, and of course, a body arrives to spoil the fun…or, in our case, make it even better. Grans is hilarious as ever with her snappy wit, and there’s a hellhound. What? Yes, a hellhound that’s done in a way that’s never made me giggle harder. The usual twists and turns arrive to bewitch Mia and make her doubt herself (as well as our guesses about the killer) until the killer is revealed. I wish the end of the story had stayed more on the page instead of skipping to the next lovely moment of happiness, but I enjoyed every page of this story. Mia Malone is one of my favorite cozy mystery heroines, the character you wish you could call your friend. This incredible trek back to Magic Springs to solve a murder with our beloved “book family” is a true treat. The addition of new “familiars,” including many homeless kitties, is why I keep returning for more books in this fun series.
