Ana Cordona, a lupine shifter, has tried her best to protect her pack after so many men and their pregnant women were poisoned. She wants to continue protecting the remaining members of her pack but after violence flows over to the humans in town, she fears that sooner or later her pack will be blamed. Also, there is another pack that is sniffing around and the alpha there, Taggert, is not someone she wants anywhere near her or her people. She needs to pick the lesser of two evils.
Connor Armstrong once lived with Ana’s pack years ago and had waited a long time to claim her after being run off by her father. Now his people are there to join her pack and finally – he is going to claim Ana. She knows that Connor is the man she still loves, but he left without a word, and that is something she will not quickly forget or forgive.
ALPHA INSTINCT by Katie Reus is a refreshing, if just a bit old-fashioned, read. My biggest issue with this romantic read was that Connor was not forthcoming with the truth about the past and therefore kept sabotaging his mating with Ana.
The action is centered around the killings of shifter women and the investigation to find the culprit. There was also the trouble with Taggert and his pack who wants Ana and her pack. They do manage to work together to strengthen the pack and their mating but there are a few things that might be a bit jarring for today’s reader.
I called this old-fashioned because some of the things that were on these pages are usually frowned upon now (having first been released in 2012), but women are no longer treated like they don’t know what they are doing. Connor, who knew what Ana had been going through and her strength in keeping the pack together still tended to order her around instead of being the partner she needed and expected. Better communication would have helped not only their relationship, but the emotional moments would have had more impact.
ALPHA INSTINCT is the first I have read of Katie Reus's Moon Shifter series, which, per the book's description, has been updated and is the author's preferred version of her text. It is a fascinating, indulgent read that any steamy paranormal fan will enjoy.
The first addictive novel in USA Today bestselling author Katie Reus's Moon Shifter series.
He ghosted her years ago...
Ana Cordona has been a strong leader for the lupine shifters who survived after half her pack was murdered. As tough as she is, her pack is vulnerable to a devious neighbor who wants their land-and Ana as his own. So when a ghost from her past barrels back into her life promising protection, it's almost enough to make Ana forget how he walked out on her before-and reluctantly accept his offer to mate.
Now he's back.
Connor isn't walking away again. Ana has always been his mate, something his wolf accepted long ago. And the only reason he left before was for her own protection. Whatever it takes, he's determined not to leave her side again-but danger is all around them in the form of a rival pack and a radicalized human element in town who wants to destroy all shifters. If they want a chance at a future-and to survive the deadly threats closing in-they're going to have to learn to trust each other. Unfortunately, the danger is closer than they ever imagined.
