Virginia state trooper Riley Tatum doesn’t have much time to dwell on her past. Between her job and her foster daughter, who she is in the process of adopting, Riley has more than enough on her plate. When a body with a striking physical resemblance to Riley is found with playing cards in her pocket, Riley is taken back to a night she still struggles to remember, when she was kidnapped, drugged, and came to on the street with some playing cards in her pocket.

Former FBI agent Clay Bowman was not in a good place the first time he and Riley ended up in bed. It’s been five years since they saw each other and Clay, who now works for private contractor Shield Security, is hoping for a second chance. Before that can happen though, Clay has to return to the case of the Shark, a serial killer he never was able to capture while with the FBI. With it looking more and more like the Shark is back for Riley as she was the one that got away, Clay is determined to be there for her this time, whether she wants him to be or not.
