Mystery | Romance

The need for a special unit of the Krewe of Hunters has been in the minds of the powers that be and they have finally found the right starting point. Della Hamilton had been saved by the ghost of a good friend as a young woman and that led her to join the F.B.I. Mason Carter was a loner of an agent but was soon drawn in by his meeting with Della and the bosses of the Krewe, and finding others who are just like him is a big help. Soon they are winging away as two of the Blackbirds join others who would soon be added to the new group and facing some of the craziest, deadliest foes on the face of the earth.

WHISPERS AT DUSK begins Heather Graham's Blackbird series with a bang! Mason is face-to-face with a "vampire" serial killer trying to save a young girl, and Della joins in the scene to distract and help save the girl. Thus the new members of the team begin. Along with a plethora of ghosts, and help from agencies in Europe, they work together to stop a deadly, insane, charismatic killer.

Many historical tales are added to the plot line, fleshing out the various characters, and the world around them, giving readers a fun touch of history or myth. The romance between Della and Mason adds a softer side to this story as a needed break in the mayhem they must face. Mason had lost one partner and he is very protective of this one, oftentimes forgetting she is a trained agent. They manage to work through that very neatly. The other agents who join the new Krewe in searching for this killer are nicely fleshed out in a way that makes them seem plausible.

WHISPERS AT DUSK by Heather Graham gives mystery readers everything they could want and more. Because this is the first of a new series, there were times when it did seem wordy and a touch repetitive but all in all the world was built well, the characters perfectly normal, and that crazy serial killer? Read WHISPERS AT DUSK and find out how the Blackbirds fair.

SUMMARY

When darkness falls, there’s nowhere to hide.

Four bodies have been discovered along Europe’s riverbanks, placed with care—and completely drained of blood. Pinpricks on their throats indicate a slender murder weapon, but DNA found in the wounds suggests something far more sinister. Tasked with investigating, the FBI recruits Agents Della Hamilton and Mason Carter to Blackbird, an international offshoot of the Krewe of Hunters. If you want to catch a vampire killer, you need agents who can speak with the dead.

The pair travel to Norway, where the shadowy forests of Lillehammer reveal a gruesome scene. The killer is thirsty for more victims, and the bloodless trail soon leads Della and Mason to a group that believes drinking blood is the key to immortality. To catch the culprit of such an intimate crime, the agents will have to get close. Mason’s already lost one partner; he’s not ready to risk Della as bait. But sometimes justice requires a sacrifice…
