Riley Smith, an archaeologist (last seen searching and finding the true Helen of Troy in A FACE TO DIE FOR) returns to a southeast Asia island in search of a warrior woman and treasure. The guardian of the island, its people and its secrets, Maya, called Riley to help her before treasure hunters and an old enemy destroy everything. Who will survive when all is said and done?

Also on hand to help is Michael Cade, Riley’s lover, and, if she would let him, her protector. Somehow Eve Duncan, a forensic sculptor, finds herself a part of this adventure, though she isn’t sure how. It was probably Riley, though she only half asked her to help. And as the readers do, Eve becomes intrigued with the island’s secrets.

THE SURVIVOR is Iris Johansen at her very best. There are always aspects of Ms. Johansen’s books that might seem a bit unrealistic, but once you begin to read you believe every word. A female gladiator (something I had not realized might have been a real thing until I looked it up), a perfectly preserved body, a treasure trove that will make your mind boggle, and unicorns. Yes, I said unicorns. Read THE SURVIVOR to find out what that means.

Riley felt she owed Maya for helping her and her father escape once before but now finds herself in a fight to survive when she does go back to help. Maya’s daughter, Bailey, is an adorable, strong-willed, loving little girl, who will steal your heart. Cade is his usual self, and he really loves Riley even though he is often pulled in a dozen different ways as his skill for diplomacy is much needed in a crazy world. He is being careful to not scare her away when what he wants to do is put her safely behind solid walls with 24/7 protection. He is certainly smart enough to know that will not work in his favor if he tried to push that idea. However, of all the characters involved in THE SURVIVOR, the one I found most intriguing is Finn Kagan. He turns out to be a mountain expert, great with kids and maybe just a bit crazy. I hope to see more of this man, perhaps even in his own story down the road.

As always when reading an Iris Johansen book, you will find an adventure-filled storyline, dangerous bad guys, intriguing characters, fun, and insightful dialogue with just the right touch of romance. THE SURVIVOR has all this and more.
