For fans of author Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series Gabriela Rose might strike a similar chord as everyone's favorite bounty hunter. Unlike Stephanie, Gabriela is very savvy and good at what she does, but sometimes very strange things happen during her job as THE RECOVERY AGENT.
This time Gabriela Rose is not working to find missing or stolen heirlooms for strangers, she is trying to find a way to help her family. They live in South Carolina and have lost almost everything in a devastating storm. They need money to rebuild. Family lore has it that a treasure including King Solomon's ring can be found and save their home. The bad part is the map for the treasure is buried under her old house - the house she gave to her ex-husband as part of their divorce. She goes to the Caribbean Island and finds the map, but Rafer is determined to go with her - and the adventure begins.
THE RECOVERY AGENT is a very fun, captivating read. Gabriela and Rafer's banter is entertaining as well as enlightening into their true personalities. They appear to be total opposites - probably why they are exes. Her family is - shall be say - quirky? What else can you say about a grandmother who gets messages from a ghost named Annie.
The treasure hunt takes them to Peru, and it is here that I found the descriptions of the landscape and scenery to be very appealing. You get the feel of a place as if you are there, and not just reading about. it. Throughout the journey a lot of history is given about the Incas and the Ring of Solomon that is very interesting. Of course, there is a bad guy, and he too is after the treasure. So, of course there is danger coming the way of the intrepid adventurers. The secondary characters are all well written and depending on whether they are good or bad guys - ones you hope to see in future books.
If you want a highly entertaining, intriguing adventure, visit another country, and learn a bit of history while watching a couple who are still attracted to one another dance around each other then you want THE RECOVERY AGENT. Hold tight, for a fun amazing ride. Very good book one of a new series.
Lost something? Gabriela Rose knows how to get it back. As a recovery agent, she’s hired by individuals and companies seeking lost treasures, stolen heirlooms, or missing assets of any kind. She’s reliable, cool under pressure, and well trained in weapons of all types. But Gabriela’s latest job isn’t for some bamboozled billionaire, it’s for her own family, whose home is going to be wiped off the map if they can’t come up with a lot of money fast.
Inspired by an old family legend, Gabriela sets off for the jungles of Peru in pursuit of the Ring of Solomon and the lost treasure of Cortez. But this particular job comes with a huge problem attached to it—Gabriela’s ex-husband, Rafer. It’s Rafer who has the map that possibly points the way to the treasure, and he’s not about to let Gabriela find it without him.
Rafer is as relaxed as Gabriela is driven, and he has a lifetime’s experience getting under his ex-wife’s skin. But when they aren’t bickering about old times the two make a formidable team, and it’s going to take a team to defeat the vicious drug lord who has also been searching for the fabled ring. A drug lord who doesn’t mind leaving a large body count behind him to get it.
