Homecomings are often filled with angst, questionable expectations and, dare we say, hope. For Chase Wilde, his homecoming was a compilation of everything you could imagine. Life has been tough since Chase left home, joined the military, saw things, and experienced a world better left in the dark. Chase carried many scars and was left with issues that were going to take time and patience to heal. Chase was an impatient man.
In one moment of extraordinary need, he took kindness, warmth, and affection from a young woman named Shelby. Shelby is another needy soul with a huge heart and an abundance of kindness. You might say Chase took advantage of those qualities. But when Shelby winds up pregnant, Chase grabs hold of the prospect of having a daughter - someone who he could love unconditionally. The problem was that Chase still had so many problems of his own to work through. Shelby was quick to realize that she had to oversee her daughter’s safety. Even though she held secret feelings for the man she had a one-night fling with, Shelby was determined to hide them. Eliza was the most important person in this triangle.
Shelby somehow manages to set up a comfortable domestic life for Chase financed by his extraordinary generosity to Eliza and her. She hadn’t expected Chase to send her money. Chase’s return home to the ranch was bankrolled by his generous stipends. Shelby thought this would be a wonderful way for Chase to exorcise his demons, find new meaning and worth and, most importantly, provide a safe, healthy environment for visits with their daughter.
Shelby did not include herself in this scenario. Chase Wilde was way beyond her in stature and family. She believed that she didn’t bring anything of value to any relationship. Chase’s family made sure to remind her of that fact. But Eliza was a link between them.
Shelby’s life has been one of tragedy. From the time she was a toddler, life was clouded with knowledge of that tragedy. Brought up by grandparents that had difficulty seeing Shelby through that cloud surely stunted her development. In fact, she was certain that she was unlovable. It’s understandable that she has an inability to believe that someone as wonderful as Chase might really love her.
CHASE WILDE COMES HOME is part of the Wyoming Wilde’s series by Jennifer Ryan. I have truly enjoyed each story in this series but there is something special about CHASE WILDE COMES HOME which makes it my favorite. Perhaps it is these characters that truly touch your heart. Or maybe just the feeling that they so deserve a happy ending. Whatever the case, CHASE WILDE COMES HOME is guaranteed to find a way into your heart.
New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Ryan begins a brand-new series with a western set romance between a former soldier and the mother of his child. Perfect for fans of Diana Palmer, Linda Lael Miller, and BJ Daniels.
They’re tough, tender, and sometimes tormented; they’re the Wildes of Wyoming, three brothers whose family ties are as strong as their wills.
Chase Wilde never expected to fall in love, especially with Shelby Payne. Years before, one passionate night had drawn these two lost souls together. Then Chase left on deployment with the Army, while Shelby raised their baby alone. Now he’s back, a wounded warrior determined to turn his life around. Shelby knows what it’s like to lose everything, including her own family. So she offers him a bargain: if he can prove himself to be the man he says he is, she will let him into their daughter’s life...and maybe even into hers.
Chase knows it will take a lot to prove to Shelby that there’s more between them than the single night they spent together. She’s everything he’s ever wanted, including the voice of reason he needs to reconcile his past and be the man he wants to be for them both. But just as their lives come together, she’s torn away from him by a dangerous person from her past, and saving her means saving himself . . . because he can’t live without her.
