If I disappeared tomorrow, would you walk into hell to find me? Olivia LeClair thought that was a perfectly reasonable question to kick off speed dating in order to be efficient. After helping capture the “Speed Dating Killer,” Olivia decided to give the real thing a shot but needs the right answer to her question before she’ll start a dialogue with her dates. The last person she expected to sit down at her table is a man everyone thought dead. Or that he’d have the right answer.

It’s been five years since anyone has seen him, so everyone thought Harlan Rancourt had perished in the same explosion that killed his father. Now Harlan is mysteriously back from the dead and no one knows what he really wants, though he says he wants to investigate the Vortex Lab and gets the Foundation director to assign Olivia to help him. As they race to uncover the details of Vortex’s Bluestone Project, the bodies start piling up. Olivia is the key to stopping Vortex and in order to keep more innocent people from dying, she’s going to have to trust Harlan really will walk into hell for her.

Jayne Ann Krentz wraps up her Fogg Lake trilogy with LIGHTNING IN A MIRROR, a tension-filled finale full of secrets, spies, and the paranormal. Harlan has been an intriguing character that’s been mentioned over the course of the first two books in the series and I don’t think readers will know what to expect from him going into this. Given his history with the Foundation, he’s a bit of a wild card, so it was fun to see how things played out with him. I love Olivia’s opening speed dating question and if I ever find myself in that situation, I might just steal it from her. I also loved the is she or isn’t she mystery around Olivia and her powers. It’ll keep you flipping the pages until the very end. LIGHTNING IN A MIRROR does finish off this series but with a mention of the Jones family and the Arcane Society, I’m hoping Krentz still has a lot more in store for us. I can’t get enough of these books.
