Romance Paranormal

ARCHANGEL’s LIGHT is Guild Hunter book fourteen in the indomitable Nalini’s Singh’s beloved PNR series that features a kickass heroine Elena, her Archangel lover Raphael, and their cadre of angels and vampires.  This series is chockablock full of breathtaking drama, angst, and horrifying battles with the unbelievably powerful angels and archangels.  The big baddie of much of the series, Lujuan, the Archangel of China, was finally defeated at great cost in the second to last installment, Archangel’s Sun.  Her death has not destroyed the many evils that she created in her kingdom, however.

Illium (“Bluebell”) an angel with gorgeous lapis lazuli wings and his centuries-long partner in hijinks Aodhan (“Sparkle”, due to his iridescent skin) have been split up while Aodhan is acting as Second to the new Archangel of China.  Illium and Aodhan are heartbreakingly estranged in the first portion of the book- a result of Aodhan’s brutal captivity and torture several years ago.  My heart was heavy at the great angst that each of these angels labors under as they try to function, each without their best friend and compatriot.

Raphael, the Archangel of New York, has finally sent Illium to assist Aodhan in his work in China, and the two angels find themselves alone together back-to-back against the dangerous creatures that Lujuan has left behind.  Their forced proximity allows them to finally break down and discuss their traumatized friendship.  Seeing them overcome their traumatic history is so uplifting, even in the midst of the evils around them.

ARCHANGEL’s LIGHT is largely a book showing the progress of the angelic world following the pitched battles of the previous several books.  There is a very slow romance that doesn’t develop until the end of the book, so readers looking for a grand love story permeating all of the pages will do better to turn their eyes towards other books in this series.  I personally enjoy having some books that feature more fabulous worldbuilding from Singh’s fertile imagination and action interspersed, so ARCHANGEL’s LIGHT is right up my alley.  Although you certainly won’t find me turning up my nose at the deeply resonant love that slowly reveals itself here.  Singh’s ARCHANGEL’s LIGHT gives us glorious best friends-turned-lovers who battle evil by day and battle their personal demons by night against the fantastical background of angelic world upheaval.

SUMMARY

Nalini Singh returns to the world of the Guild Hunters for the most highly anticipated novel of the beloved series—a love story so epic it’s been half a millennia in the making…

Illium and Aodhan.  Aodhan and Illium. For centuries they’ve been inseparable: the best of friends, closer than brothers, companions of the heart. But that was before—before darkness befell Aodhan and shattered him, body, mind, and soul. Now, at long last, Aodhan is healing, but his new-found strength and independence may come at a devastating cost—his relationship with Illium.

As they serve side by side in China, a territory yet marked by the evil of its former archangel, the secret it holds nightmarish beyond imagining, things come to an explosive decision point. Illium and Aodhan must either walk away from the relationship that has defined them—or step forward into a future that promises a bond infinitely precious in the life of an immortal…but that demands a terrifying vulnerability from two badly bruised hearts.
