THE ADVERSARY is the last big hurrah of Pia Giavonni and Dragos Cuelebre, in a novella of the Elder Races and also Chronicles of Rhyacia book number 2.  This is THE power couple for the Elder Races series by Harrison.  Dragos, a dragon and powerful head of the Wyr or shapeshifters, has left his kingdom in the U.S. to move to an Other magical realm, in order to spend more time with his unicorn wife and chase new challenges.  Harrison had originally conceived a series of four novellas telling of the new kingdom of Rhyacia.  However, due to health issues, Harrison had to trim the series from four books to two, and the release of this book, book two, has been delayed from the originally anticipated release.  While avid fans of Harrison may be disappointed to get less Pia and Dragos than originally planned, readers should certainly be able to understand that life throws us all curve balls that we cannot anticipate.  I, for one, am excited to simply get some more Pia and Dragos and to have this storyline wrapped up rather than left as an unfinished cliffhanger.

Book 1 of the Chronicles of Rhyacia ended in a dicey cliffhanger for Dragos, whose body and mind was unexpectedly overtaken by an ancient malevolent being.  THE ADVERSARY jumps right back into the action, taking off in the middle of the action, and so readers must be familiar with the previous book, at a minimum.  Readers would be best served to read THE ADVERSARY after enjoying the rest of the Elder Races books, truly.  I had just coincidentally finished my annual re-read of this beloved series when Harrison dropped this last release, so I eagerly jumped into the action here.

There is plenty of magical drama, loving determination, and dragon-y wiliness to be savored here.  Our favorite characters from previous books make their own appearances here, with a pleasing ensemble cast.  THE ADVERSARY feels a mite bit short and compressed but serves to tie up the story arc with plenty of room for future storylines if the author’s health allows.  I am always ecstatic to spend time in the Elder Races world, and THE ADVERSARY is one that I will re-read over and over to savor my time with Pia and Dragos.

SUMMARY

When Dragos and Pia move to the Other land of Rhyacia, they hope starting a new life will bring safety and freedom to their family, especially their young baby, Niall. And at first their new home seems perfect… but looks are deceiving.

Beneath Rhyacia’s idyllic façade an ancient, malevolent force lurks, waiting for the right opportunity to break free of its cage. When that opportunity comes, it strikes with devastating accuracy.

While Dragos has never backed down from a fight, he’s also never encountered an enemy like this one before. How can he fight a foe who doesn’t have a body? A foe who can invade and turn his own mind against him?

How can Dragos protect his family, when at any moment one of them may become the enemy?

As Dragos and Pia race against time to fight this unseen menace, they must also acknowledge a terrifying truth—when anyone can become the enemy, no one can be trusted.

An adversary who can trap the dragon poses a threat to everyone in Rhyacia, and that means no one is safe…

***This book does NOT end on a cliffhanger***
