Romance Comedy

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!  This is the sound of me screaming in delight about Christina Lauren’s latest release, THE SOULMATE EQUATION.  This is officially my favorite book of 2021 to date.  Drop everything and read this book immediately.  Seriously, you’ll thank me for this.  Because Lauren’s THE SOULMATE EQUATION is, in a word, stupendous.

Lauren’s writing is a little bit hit or miss for me, I either adore the book or I hate it, but heavily weighted toward adoration kind of books.  THE SOULMATE EQUATION is definitely my favorite ever by this talented writing duo.  This is a fantastic set-up.  What happens when real-life romance is compared to its statistical likelihood?

Jessica Davis is a single mom and freelance statistician who lives next door to her grandparents and is raising her cutie pie of a daughter with the help of her “village” which includes her best friend, a charming sidekick named Fizzy. Can I just say, as an aside, that I love the friendship between Fizzy and Jess.  This is what having a BFF is all about.  The nurturing and empathy between these women is simply beautiful.  Too, I love the support that Jess both gives and receives from her grandparents.  This book is filled with examples of how to live your best emotional life.  Jess is the kind of person who I would love to have as my best friend.

Dr. River Peña is the founder and head scientist of a new matchmaking company GeneticAlly, that has figured out how to match couples based on their genetics. The company found highly successful marriages and did genetic typing of them, and figured out how to use that data to predict the success of dating partners for long term romantic pairings. How cool of a premise is this?!?! When Fizzy talks Jess into submitting a DNA sample to the company, it turns out that she’s a 98% compatibility match with River.  Not interested in dating but in financial trouble, the company hires Jess to go out on some dates with River as a marketing concept before the company’s IPO.

This rom-com is all that you could possibly hope for.  My heart melted at the budding romance between these two.  River is grumpy and socially inept, and he’s so incredibly endearing!  Jess is such an incredible woman, and her complicated life gives the reader both a lot of angst as well as many melting moments of happiness. The sexy and witty romance in Lauren’s THE SOULMATE EQUATION couldn’t be any more statistically pleasing than it already is: 100% perfect.

SUMMARY

The New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners returns with a witty and effervescent novel about what happens when two people with everything on the line are thrown together by science—or is it fate? Perfect for fans of The Rosie Project and One Plus One.

Single mom Jess Davis is a data and statistics wizard, but no amount of number crunching can convince her to step back into the dating world. Raised by her grandparents—who now help raise her seven-year-old daughter, Juno—Jess has been left behind too often to feel comfortable letting anyone in. After all, her father’s never been around, her hard-partying mother disappeared when she was six, and her ex decided he wasn’t “father material” before Juno was even born. Jess holds her loved ones close, but working constantly to stay afloat is hard...and lonely.

But then Jess hears about GeneticAlly, a buzzy new DNA-based matchmaking company that’s predicted to change dating forever. Finding a soulmate through DNA? The reliability of numbers: This Jess understands.

At least she thought she did, until her test shows an unheard-of 98% compatibility with another subject in the database: GeneticAlly’s founder, Dr. River Pena. This is one number she can’t wrap her head around, because she already knows Dr. Pena. The stuck-up, stubborn man is without a doubt not her soulmate. But GeneticAlly has a proposition: Get to know him and we’ll pay you. Jess—who is barely making ends meet—is in no position to turn it down, despite her skepticism about the project and her dislike for River. As the pair are dragged from one event to the next as the “Diamond” pairing that could make GeneticAlly a mint in stock prices, Jess begins to realize that there might be more to the scientist—and the science behind a soulmate—than she thought.

Funny, warm, and full of heart, The Soulmate Equation proves that the delicate balance between fate and choice can never be calculated.
